* How to Become an Official

To cut a long story short, Miles Newman has put together the manual on how to become an Official and what you need to do to STAY qualified.  The Australian Sports Commission claim it to be the BEST submission they have seen and for the second time it has achieved Best Practice certification.

INTRODUCTION - PLEASE READ

Once, in 1927 an Official made a mistake! It has never happened again!

Lets get back to reality. Officials get placed under enormous pressure from coaches, players and themselves to get every decision correct. This is not always possible however more often than not a correct ruling is made by an official that isn't understood by the team it is being made against.

This area of the page is designed to give players/officials/spectators and opportunity to ask questions about the rules of the game. What ever the reason or perspective of your question, this area will give you access to some of the countries leading authorities on the rules of American Football.

Ask your question/s here and we will endeavor to give you a correct answer. There are no stupid questions so ask away what ever your level. Chances are that someone else wants the same answer but is too scared to ask the question.

Obviously we cannot make judgment calls so do your best to keep your situation as objective as possible. In other words if you say that you saw a situation where  B21 made contact with A81 before the ball touched the receiver then the call will be pass interference.  If 20 other people saw it differently then that can't be reflected in the answers given.

To make things easier for everyone to understand, if you can, try and use the terminology Officials use.

Call Offense - Team A or A34 (the 34 being a random player number)

Call Defense - Team B or B56 (the 56 being a random player number)

Positions should only be mentioned if it is important to a ruling. In the example below, if that happened to a player other
than the QB there might be a different ruling.

For Example

On a pass play, A81 blocks B44 in the back pushing him into A11 (QB) after he has thrown the ball. What ruling should be applied?

What this is describing is an offensive player (A81), [possibly] a receiver who blocks a defender in the back. The defender (B44) is then pushed into the Offense Quarter Back (A11) after the ball has been thrown.

DISCLAIMER

ANY SUGGESTION, ADVICE OR INTERPRETATION GIVEN IN THIS AREA IS FOR INSTRUCTIVE PURPOSES ONLY. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE CAN THE INTERPRETATION/S BE USED TO ARGUE A CALL MADE BY ANY OFFICIAL IN ANY GAME OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL BOTH IN AUSTRALIA AND OVER SEAS.

COMMENT

This section is meant to improve the quality of our game through understanding. The spirit in which it will be used will hopefully reflect your
curiosity as a student of the game. In the rule book, there are two (2) specific references to decisions on a game being final so far as the result of the game shall be concerned.

Rule 5-2-10

"Rules Decision Final...No rule decision may be changed after the ball is next legally snapped or free kicked"

Rule 11-2-1-b

"The referee is the soul authority for the score and his decisions on the rules and other matters pertaining to the game shall be final"

Users of this section should keep this in mind.
