* How to Become an Official

To cut a long story short, Miles Newman has put together the manual on how to become an Official and what you need to do to STAY qualified.  The Australian Sports Commission claim it to be the BEST submission they have seen and for the second time it has achieved Best Practice certification.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Accredit

The process of granting recognition to a student for completion of a set course of training.

AGCA

Australian Gridiron Coaches Association

AGOA

Australian Gridiron Officials Association. The national body responsible for training and accrediting officials to officiate the sport of Gridiron in Australia.

ASC

Australian Sports Commission

Back Judge

One of the on-field positions in a gridiron officiating crew, who works deep in the defensive area of the playing field.

Certification

The special certificates which AGOA grants for qualification in specific skill sets eg Referee and Instructor.

Course Manager

The name for a senior official designated by the NDT to manage a course on behalf of the NDT.

Game Grading

Games are graded according to the perceived general level of difficulty in maintaining the game control and management.

GFL

Gridiron Football League.  A state or regionally based body organising the playing of the sport of Gridiron

GOA

Gridiron Officials Association.  A body organised for the training and management of the officiating resources on a state or regional basis.  All state or regionally based assignments are conducted by these bodies.  They are responsible to conduct all training programs for basic officiating and for recommendations for accreditation.

Gridiron Australia (GA)

The nationally recognised and government approved governing body for the sport of Gridiron in Australia

Level 1

1. An official who has completed the basic officiating course.

2. The introductory course for Gridiron Officiating.

Level 2

1. An official who has completed the Level 2 officiating course.

2. The intermediate course for Gridiron Officiating.

Level 3

1. An official who has passed the senior and national level of AGOA qualification.

2. The advanced course for Gridiron Officiating.

Line Judge

One of the on-field positions in a gridiron officiating crew, who works on one side of the playing field.

Linesman

One of the on-field positions in a gridiron officiating crew, who works on one side of the playing field.

NCAA

National Collegiate Athletics Association (USA).  The body which defines the American Football Rules in use in Australia and other bodies of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

NDRM

National Director of Rules and Mechanics.  Responsible to the AGOA Committee of Management for:

  • The analysis and development of rules and mechanics as applied in Australia
  • Development of the Australian Football Officials Manual
  • Development of other applicable rules and mechanics texts as required

NDT

National Director of Training.  Responsible to the AGOA Committee of Management for:

  • The training of officials under the auspices of AGOA
  • The quality control of the program
  • The development of the program to meet changing needs.

NOAC

National Officials Accreditation Committee. The AGOA national technical training and accreditation committee. It consists of NDT (Chairman), state Training Managers and NDRM.

NOAS

National Officials Accreditation Scheme.  A program of the Australian Sports Commission Sports Education Service to recognise official’s accreditation.

Official

A person who administers the rules of the game of gridiron on the field.

Player Official

A term used to describe an official who continues to play or coach the sport as opposed to an a full-time official.

Qualify

Completion of a set course of training by a student.

Referee

1. One of the on-field positions in a gridiron officiating crew. Usually the senior member of the crew.

2. Also an AGOA certificate.

SES

Sports Education Service of the Australian Sports Commission

State Supervisor

Supervisor of Officials is the traditional football name for the Training Manager. The State Supervisor may be a separate position or may be the title of the state Training Manager.  The term Training Manager is used in this program to mean either position.

Training Manager

Each state appoints a Training Manager to manage the development of officials in that state.  This person is responsible to:

  • The state GOA for the training of the individual officials and the maintenance of their qualification records
  • AGOA for the quality control of the officials training on a daily basis

Umpire

One of the on-field positions in a gridiron officiating crew, who works in the midst of the defensive backfield.

Updating

The process of re-qualification to retain a specific accreditation level.

All updating is based upon a four year cycle.

An official must meet their updating requirements by the end for the four year cycle.
