* How to Become an Official

To cut a long story short, Miles Newman has put together the manual on how to become an Official and what you need to do to STAY qualified.  The Australian Sports Commission claim it to be the BEST submission they have seen and for the second time it has achieved Best Practice certification.

LEVEL 3 OFFICIAL

Capability Objective

A Level 3 official is able to officiate in any position up to and including Referee on any game, including local competition, interstate or national matches.

This is the senior level qualification for AGOA.  At this level the student must be contributing to the development of Gridiron officiating.

 

This is a National Level qualification.  A Level 2 official can study all of the materials and complete the game requirements but if they do not work on Grade 3 games and participate in National level events they will not be accredited to Level 3.

 

To qualify as AGOA Level 3 the trainee MUST:

·         Complete the pre-course requirements

·         Complete the AGOA Level 3 training program

·         Participate in Supervision and Mentoring of Junior officials

·         Participate in the National Level Training Program

·         Complete the External Course requirements

·         Complete the AGOA Level 3 exam to a 85% Pass

·         Complete 100 games minimum including 10 Grade 3 games.

·         Complete 3 on-field assessments to an ABOVE AVERAGE standard

·         Participate in one National Championships and other national level events

·         Be recommended by AGOA National Officials Accreditation Committee

·         Be accredited by AGOA Committee of Management

 

Invitation to Qualify.  The AGOA National Director of Training will issue an invitation to qualify to Level 2 officials recommended by the state Training Manager.  The nominees must have completed the prerequisites listed below.  State GOA may prepare Level 2 officials for Level 3 qualification once they have been recommended and accepted by AGOA.

LEVEL 3 TRAINING PROGRAM

Pre Course

·         Be qualified as an AGOA Level 2 for 18 months prior to commencement of the Level 3 course

·         Be prepared to study and commit to training for a period of at least 18 months

·         Submit a paper / project on a set topic - eg How to officiate an aspect of play

In Course

·         The course is to include 6 days of workshop / formal study.

·                All the subjects listed in the Level 3 Course Overview (see Section 12.3) either as a formal course or by correspondence

·                Participation in one Senior National Championship week including attendance at all Game Reviews, Game Preparation and some Team Liaison visits.

Post Course

·         The post course activities are to include:

·                Completion of the Level 3 Examination to a pass mark of 85%

·                Rules and Mechanics Examination (150 questions mixed multiple choice, situation assessment)

·                100 hours practical - comprising games, instructing, participating in sanctioned national level events, preparation to be recorded in the Officials Log Book

·                Participation in 10 Grade 3 games (see Section 5.5)

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

·         All Level 3 students will be expected to participate in the National Level Training Program which will be conducted primarily via email.  The program will

·                set a study requirement each month with a submission to be returned

·                form part of theory element for accreditation and updating for Level 3

·                form part of eligibility criteria for selection for National Level officiating events

·         Students at this level are required to complete 80% ie 5 out of the 6 set requirements per year

Supervision and Mentoring

·         All Level 3 students must be actively involved in instructing and mentoring junior officials. The ASC-SES considers that actively mentoring junior officials is a must for elite level officials.

·         Complete the ASC-SES Level 1 course and / or Assessment course

EXTERNAL COURSES

·         All Level 3 students are expected to extend their view beyond the sport of Gridiron and to look at wider sports management issues, student are to complete two of the following elective external subjects during the course of their program:

·                ACS-SES Level 1 Coaching

·                First Aid - Basic Level

·                Legal – Covered during Training Course but to be done externally if main course done by correspondence.

·                Conflict Management

·                Risk Management and OH & S

Evaluations

·         All Level 3 students are to participate in the following evaluations:

·                Three of themselves on-field by senior officials at ABOVE AVERAGE standard.

·                Three written by themselves on junior officials

·                Three written on them by junior officials

·                Self evaluation of a 30 minute video of themselves officiating

Thesis

A final 1500 word paper on a research topic - contributing to the development of officiating Gridiron.
