* How to Become an Official

To cut a long story short, Miles Newman has put together the manual on how to become an Official and what you need to do to STAY qualified.  The Australian Sports Commission claim it to be the BEST submission they have seen and for the second time it has achieved Best Practice certification.

UPDATING QUALIFICATION

The updating of qualifications is conducted over a four(4) year cycle. 

·         All officials are to update their qualifications either by retraining for their existing Level or by qualifying for the next Level of Certification. 

·         Due to the constant revisions in the NCAA Rule Book all officials must complete a Rules Training Program as part of their updating program.

·         Fully qualified officials may use external ASC - SES / NOAS sponsored courses for their Update programs.

All officials updating their qualification are to use ASC - SES/NOAS Update Logs to record their activities.

UPDATE PROGRAMS

During the updating period, commencing at 1 January of the year originally qualified, the official must complete the following to retain their status:

·         complete another course of the same Level within 4 years OR

·         achieve the next Level within 4 years

AND

·         achieve 12 hours of non-game related updating activity, such as sports related self-education, over a 4 year period.

All activities are to be recorded in the individual officials Officiating Log Book.

Application for updated qualifications is made on the Application for Accreditation form.

Annual CURRENCY Re-qualification

The purpose of the Annual Currency Re-qualification is to keep the official competent, aware of the latest rule changes and match aware. Officials will not be selected for representative or finals series assignments unless they have completed these minimum standards. The annual currency re-qualification involves:

·         A minimum of 5 games (for Level 1 - Grade 1, for Level 2 and 3 – Grade 2)

·         One on-field assessment

·         Completion of the annual theory examination for the highest level held
