Microsoft Access Developer's Guide to SQL Server

This book by Mary Chipman is well researched and thorough. It gives insights and lead ins to people who know Access and are trying to get into SQL Server or MSDE Development.
The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL This book by Ken Henderson is insightful reading into SQL Server
Que's Special Edition Using SQL ISBN 0789719746 A well written SQL book by Rafe Colburn - gives you generic SQL syntax and approaches and also spotlights nuances in the different dialects.
The Data Model Resource Book: A Library of Universal Data Models for All Enterprises, Revised Edition, Volume 1

The Data Model Resource Book: A Library of Universal Data Models by Industry Types, Revised Edition, Volume 2

These books stood in the bookshop near me and then were returned due to lack of interest. They are actually quite useful - if you want to see examples of normalisation for typical businesses and get a grip of the fields that people collect, they're good.
Fairly cerebral - there are a number of books that introduce you to SQL, Joe's books give you advanced Q & A approaches.
Susan Novalis wrote her original book on Access macros at a time when the community had decided that Access Basic was the only way to do many things. It surprised many of us that the Access Macro Language could be that powerful and flexible.

It appears that Susan has shifted focus to VBA in later versions of Access.

VBA Developer's Handbook By Ken Getz and Mike Gilbert This is similar in style to the Access 97 Developer's Handbook. There is little overlap and it concentrates on advanced techniques in VBA, not the host application.
VBA for Dummies  This is a fun introduction to VBA. Not a thick book.
Microsoft® Excel 97 Developer's Handbook The definitive Excel VBA series of books by Eric Wells and Steve Harshbarger.
Word 2000 Developer's Handbook Guy Hart Davis writes a good Word / VBA book.
asp.net for Developers

Special Edition Using SQL

By Rafe Colburn - pretty good guide to generic SQL with some examples on real database products

If you have Access or MS Office consistently crashing after it has been performing ok, it may mean that somehow the installation has been damaged. You should first use Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and try Repair (Office 2000) or Uninstall (Office 97). An uninstall often does not restore you machine - there will be some Office .dlls and registry settings still remaining. These erases ensure that the .dlls are removed, as also relevant registry entries.

Be careful - sometimes standard Windows fonts are removed as well - Arial, Times New Roman etc.. Have copy of these fonts on you so that you can restore them if the erasers have been too aggressive.
