Journal Articles

January 2003
Welcome back to the second half of the season!  Both Andrew and I had a busy Christmas competing in National Titles in the NS’s (Adelaide) & MG’s (Lake Munmorah).  We hope you had a good break over Christmas too.
Sailing will be held with the Seniors at 2pm on Saturdays.  You should arrive at the club by at least 12.30 to make sure that you have time to rig your boat, eat lunch and be ready to sail by 1.45pm.

Diary Dates:
Sunday 16 February 2003 –Kurnell Cup:

This is a great race we hold once a year – the senior boats race to Brighton beach, Kurnell and home.  Junior boats race to George’s River Skiff Club and home again.  A marathon race, but it’s heaps of fun and we have a BBQ afterwards!  The race starts at 12.30pm, so be at the club by 11am to give yourself plenty of time to get ready.

Saturday 22 March 2003 – Boat working bee 9am – 12noon:
Help us to fix the boats you’ve learnt to sail on – and learn how to fix your own.  The more helpers we have, the easier the job will be!  Normal sailing will be held in the afternoon.

Training:
There are some interesting articles on the Victorian Sabot Association website – just follow the link!  Article:  How to get out of irons

We are also planning a bring a friend day – so start thinking about school friends who you think would like to try out sailing!

December 2002
The Beginners Sailing School was held during early November in pristine conditions. By the end of the intensive course everyone was able to sail their optimist with minimal guidance. The Beginners have now joined our intermediate group on Saturday mornings for some extra lessons until Christmas. Racing for beginners and Intermediates is held in conjunction with normal Saturday afternoon racing from 2pm.

Many thanks to all our helpers and parents. The more, the merrier!

Sailing Courses

Sailing for juniors is held between Kangaroo Point, Bald Face Point and Como Bridge.  Junior sailing may be viewed from the clubhouse or from Bald Face Point.

The starter's boat will display an orange board with a black number on it.  This will be the course that you will sail for the day.  It's a good idea to print out the map (above) and the courses (below), cover them in contact/laminate and stick on the inside of your boat.

Starting Procedure

At the start of each race, different flags on the starter's boat signal the number of minutes to go before the start.  A horn/hooter is sounded with each change of flags.

5 minutes    MJ (red 'M' with wings) flag goes up
4 minutes    'Blue Peter' (P) flag goes up
1 minute      'Blue Peter' (P) flag comes down
0 minute      GO! MJ flag comes down

Remember:
When you start/finish a race at the club, you will always cross the line with the starter's boat on starboard (your right) and the start/finish bouy on port (your left).
