OKTOBERFEST
2005
Vivienne Newton
For those Lions who don’t know me, I am a severely physically disabled
person who is lucky enough to have a motorized wheelchair to drive around in
instead of having to walk everywhere like you poor creatures of the wild. Please
forgive me, like a lot of males who have Cerebral Palsy I have a weird sense of
humour. The trouble is I have been lead to believe I am a female. As I look
nothing like their natural father, even my now adult children call me,
‘Mum’. All jokes aside, I have been asked to write about this year’s
Oktoberfest & Market Day held on October 23.
This year it was a bright and sunny day and it was the first year the Maroubra
Lions Club had a go at holding a jumble stall in addition to being involved in
the organization of the day and having the usual food and drink stall.
Unfortunately, I arrived late and most of the better quality items the jumble
stall had to offer had already been sold. Bob Bunton
introduced me to Kim, the president of the Maroubra Lions Club and invited me to
join the congregation of members and their relations in the shade inside the
jumble stall.
I had already been around the fair grounds and had found most of the merchandise
unbelievably expensive. If people want to sell goods on market days, they have
to lower their prices considerably to similar items sold in shops. On my arrival
in the jumble stall, the Maroubra Lions Club members were already hot and tired
but very pleased with the money they were making for the under-privileged people
of our society. For the next three hours I watched the Maroubra Lions Club
members work diligently despite the sweat running down their faces and wondered
if most of the recipients really appreciate how much time and effort goes into
raising the money for each generous donation.
On the down side, I would have liked to see new hand-made articles on the jumble
stall. I think this would have attracted more people and generated even more
money because at this time of the year people are already buying Christmas
gifts.
