ANGFA Rainbowfish
Description
Mature fish are bright yellow (including fins) with a narrow midlateral band, which is interrupted along its length by narrow yellow streaks.
Distribution
Only collected from two small creeks in the Yakati River system of West Papua. The Yakati is located in the narrow isthmus connecting the Vogelkop Peninsula and the remainder of West Papua.
Habitat & Ecology
Melanotaenia angfa was collected in slow to rapid-flowing water with rock or sand bottom and minimal aquatic vegetation. They growing to a length of around 13 cm; males are usually deeper bodied than females.
Remarks
This fish was discovered by Gerald Allen in 1989 and named "angfa' in honour of the Australia New Guinea Fishes Association. Live specimens have been collected by Heiko Bleher but they are not readily available in the aquarium hobby.
