A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH IN MELBOURNE by J. A. ( March 2002 )
In the early part of the 1970's, two Christian families came together regularly to have home meetings. Their fellowship was mainly concerning the oneness of the Body of Christ and the church ground. By the Lord's mercy, a strong and clear vision of the church was imparted unto these brothers. By the year of 1973 these two families together with a few young brothers from Monash University started the Lord's Table meetings at the brothers' house in Clayton. And for the following years they continued steadfastly in the teaching and fellowship of the apostles, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. The participants of the early church life in Melbourne remain approximately 20 for a number of years without increase. And yet at the time they were not concerned about the number but fully enjoying the reality of the church life. There were a lot of traffics between churches in the 70's and the 80's . We attended church conferences and training interstate and overseas and welcomed others to visit us as much. We were greatly helped and encouraged by the fellowship that flowed among the churches. The increase came in the late 70's and the early 80's. The main cause was through the migration of two more families from overseas who were already practicing the church life in their localities. Then the church meetings moved from the brothers' house to Hawthorn school hall and then to Clayton school hall respectively because the numbers added to the church was rather rapid. By the year of 1982 we purchased our meeting hall in Ashwood and officially registered ourselves as the Church in Melbourne. Quite a number of us moved to live around the meeting hall for practical reasons. For we met as often as 5 to 6 times weekly. We tried to keep the meeting hall open all the time and for that reason we also purchased the house next door. A full time brother with his family lived there as the caretaker of the hall. In the mid 1980's a few more families from the churches in NZ migrated to Melbourne. Many brothers and sisters had risen up to serve the Lord and His Church full time. With the help of the fulltimers the whole church had risen up to preach the gospel. The Church in Melbourne sent team after team overseas to learn and assist the churches in Taiwan while they were trying to gospelize the whole island. We also had a gospel outreach in the suburb of Richmond. We had about 200 saved and baptized and started a district meeting there for some time in order to care for the newly saved ones. The Church life in Melbourne was at its peak in the 80's. In the 1990's many high peak truths were released from the Ministry based on God's New Testament Economy. In the recovered Church we enjoyed the Spirit, the Word and the fellowship among the believers. All are encouraged to speak for and speak forth Christ in the meeting. We love the Lord so much that we never cease to pursue after the truth in the Bible. Every six months for the last 3 decades we have had training conferences on the Bible, book by book and it is still going strong today. We encourage one another to go through the Old Testament and the New Testament books systematically year after year. For the last 12 years we have continued enjoying morning watch with one another using the ministry book called "Holy Word for Morning Revival". It is so refreshing and vitalizing to spend time to touch the Lord first thing in the morning. During such time we freely release our spirit by calling on the Lord's name, pray reading the Word, praying, praising, singing and fellowshipping. In recent years the churches are practising the God ordained way to have as much blending as possible with other local churches and among ourselves locally; by practising individually the prayreading, studying, reciting and the prophesying of the Word (PSRP); practicing corporately the begetting, nourishing, perfecting and building (BNPB); reviving every morning and overcoming every day by praying and blending as often as we can. Looking over for the past 30 years, we were not without difficult and trying times but the Lord was always there to grace us. Blessed are those who put their trust in His divine arrangement to come this far. By the Lord's sovereign hand, He has blessed us with meetings in three districts: Ashwood, Preston and Glen Iris with numbers of about 200.
