...but there was something which made this story different...
I was a Quaker. Quake 3 Arena was all I ever played. And, even more surprisingly, I never was good at CS, and thus I never really liked it or played it. Half-Life and TFC weren't for me either. HL games were lacking in something that I found so plentiful amongst the Quake games. I never pictured myself leaving Quake 3 Arena behind for a Half-Life mod, let alone a realistic one such as Day of Defeat. And, yet, it has happened.
I remember saying to my friends that you're either born a Half-Life player or you're a die-hard Quaker. You couldn't be both. They were complete opposites and chances are that if you're good at one, you're probably nowhere near as good at the other. And that's where DoD amazed me. It has made me a dedicated Day of Defeat player, it's made me want to form a clan within a week of first trying it, it made me tell all my friends about it, it made me strive to be in the top 200 in the world and it made me forget about Q3A.
I really have to commend the creators of DoD. They've taken the Half-Life engine and an overused excuse for a first-person shooter and turned it into something the likes of which I've never seen before. In my eyes, Day of Defeat not only stands up as a good mod, it blows Counter-Strike right out of the water.
And better yet, any complaints that I've read or heard about Day of Defeat are being rectified in the next version (Beta 1.2). For a mod to be this good this early, and to change a devout Quaker into a humble Half-Life player, is just something I've never heard of before - especially with just a mod.
For me, there is no longer a seperation between Half-Life and Quake3. I gave DoD a chance, relunctantly might I add, and was rewarded tenfold. If anyone who is reading this is a hardcore Quake 3 Arena player or someone who has never liked Half-Life or its mods, try Day of Defeat now. I know it's a cliche, but you won't regret it.
