About David Hope

David Hope is a civil engineer and manager with over 40 years experience in the water industry. Over the last 15 years he has practiced mainly as an independent consultant. Previously he worked with Sydney Water, who provide water and sewerage services to four million people. David held a range of senior managerial and technical positions, encompassing all aspects of policy, planning, construction, operations and maintenance. He has been involved in many projects which cross the boundaries of technical and managerial disciplines.

As an independent consultant, David specialises in the managerial and technical aspects of Infrastructure undertakings. He specialises in providing strategies where there are complex technical and technology issues, and the need to change organisations or cultures to effectively implement solutions; and in business justification and implementation strategies for technologies such as SCADA. David calls on his network of expert independents and business contacts to provide the best possible mixture of resources and information to produce the best possible results for clients.

David occasionally participates as a speaker at conferences, as a workshop leader or as a trainer at courses in Asset Management; SCADA business justification and implementation strategies; and process benchmarking. Venues have included London, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Johannesburg.

David was awarded Life Membership of the Australian Water Association in 2009. He is a former President of the NSW Branch of the Association; and, formerly a Federal Board member and Federal Vice-President with responsibility for Conferences and Publications, including Ozwater Convention & Exhibition and Water Journal. He was the Deputy Chair of the 1995 and 2007 Ozwater Convention & Exhibition.

David is also interested in school education and is a former Board Member at the Board of Studies NSW, the Community Languages Board NSW, Stewart House and the Healthy Kids Association. David has served as an officer of the NSW P&C Federation and is currently the President of the Northern Sydney District Council of P&C Associations.

My Point of View : provides a peek into one possible future for the water industry - keeping in mind that such predictions are mostly way off the mark! (for web browser version, click here)

A brief history of assets - white elephants of the future? looks back at the past and whimsically ponders the future. Will a technology-driven paradigm shift result in assets owned by water utilities becoming white elephants, with the utilities being driven out of business (for web browser version, click here).
