What I mean, is a potential member wants assistance or whatever. I post
his message, then have to advise him to "join" the list, then if any
responses come in, I then forward them onto him until I know he has
subscribed. this is awkward and silly.

What I am saying is to tell him/her to join the list, then post his/her
message. That way, they don't miss any responses, so I still moderate
non-members, however it's easy to delete spam with the click of a
button, so rather than confuse the issue, i will allow only members to
post.

That make sense?

Cheers Don...

Not at all John, i have had several new members post without
subscribing.
In future, I'll just politely let then know that they must subscribe
then send their message, and all is well.

It is the best option i feel, and stops any spam reaching the list.

Cheers Don...

Attn: All
I have just purchased a 'c' compiler by CCS that compiles in PIC code am was
wondering if anyone had any tips on intergrating it with MPLAB and how to
run it from there, and also if anyone had a couple of code samples I could
see just to get things up and running ( templates, code, etc).
Please advise, and many thanks.

you are posting to a small group at SimmStick John, it's a start up

I suggested the piclist to you, which has 1800 members.
You will get plenty of answers there.
I promise you. Would I lie? :-)

Hi Gang,
I have invited you all in the past to pop over and join the SimmStick
user group now set up:

Group Description:
Support for SimmStick, the 30 pin simm socket based Single Board
Computer System. Includes support for any hardware or software related
product.

  Group email addresses:
  Post Message simmstick@e...
  Subscribe simmstick-subscribe@e...
  Unsubscribe simmstick-unsubscribe@e...
  List owner simmstick-owner@e...

I will be removing all links to this list ""sisuser@i..."
<sisuser@i...>" from today.

there has been some recent problems with the list, and to be fair, Kalle
has set up all of the lists on his site at no cost to the members, and
put in a lot time time to make sure it all goes well.

I'm not sure how long it has been, I guess about 3 years.

I wish to thank Kalle for setting up this list in the first place, and
putting up with all of us for so long.

Please read the privacy clauses in the egroups agreement. I'm not real
happy with it, but it's a free service.
Basically, consider a message on the new group as being much the same as
the front page of a newspaper, however egroups interpretation of this
even is open to question. If you wish to protect a design, don't post
information about it on egroups.

Having said that, I hope you can all come across and make SimmStick a
better product for all.
We have a lot of exciting designs on the way in the very near future,
and we are getting organized for the SimmStick Contest2000 also.

Chat doesn't have to be about SimmStick, it can be any hardware or
software related product that the Dontronics dealers are involved with.
I think we all have very similar interests.

Something is very interesting with the handling of new subscriptions to
the group.
Today I subscribed and I recieved the following within 15 min. I't is
not a great concern to me as I can filter this out, I thought I would
just post this to highlight an event that has happened.

All, this should probably come from Don, but I couldn't help but try out some of the features on the eGroups server. So, what would you like to see developed for the SimmStick platgform next? Thanks!

All,

There are a lot of features here! Very cool. One thing you might want
to look at - you can edit your membership record and have new postings
emailed to you instead of having to look at the web to check for new
stuff. It might be good to have one more last message go out to the
old list letting people know.

I'll be posting from time to time on the old list Bob, but after about a
week, i will unsubscibe, and tell Kalle to shut the list down.

No problems with the poll. I don't have time to scratch myself right

Don,

This piclist message is exactly what I'd like the SimmStick site to offer:

New SimmStick(tm) designs
Schematics for one-of designs (on protoboard)
How-tos and example projects
Example software

These are the types of things that I would like to offer to the SimmStick
platform.

Take care,
-Rob

Yes we can add all these external chips on to do everything better BUT... do
we really need it? How much can we accomplish with the basic "virtual"
versions supplied by the chip, a cable, a PC with a GUI front panel and a
few passives alone? Audio frequency O'Scope and signal generator, a few MHz
for logic and functions, 1 or 2 variable regulated power supplies. Its
enough for most work AND... it would cost what? $10.00?

Right now, people are paying $30, $40, $50, $200 for PIC programmers alone
and "making do" with Radio Shaft DVMs and wall warts to get started with
PICs. I think we can give them much, much more for much, much less.

As a professional, I can always use another 'scope channel and it doesn't
have to be fast most of the time. The digital triggering and sample hold
ability would be a nice complement to my analog 'scope.

If the CUMP thing would take off, we could have groups of people supporting
the programming of a growing list of other processors, PIC and AVR and
others.

Beginners like Jon can see the logic of it. I keep hearing echoes of this
idea from so many different places its just impossible for me to keep my
mouth shut about it.

Its something the PICList community needs to come together on. Its an open
source, give back to the community thing that everyone will benefit from.
Somebody will make a PCB and kit and sell them and others will add routines
and add ons like PLLs and external RAM scopes and better more sensitive
analog front ends, etc... Someone will write and sell or give away a nice
IDE style PC GUI front end program.

But to start with, someone has to take a '877, take Stickleys register
monitor and extend it into a full monitor, setup timing and port pin capture
/ function generation routines and PC display / stimulus program, add the
A2D setup code, analog front end and PC front end program to display
captured traces, add the PWM output and signal generator code and PC program
for frequency, waveform and amplitude selection, add the regulator biasing
passives and incorporate the PWM output for that with the PC program to set
the voltage out and then people (come on CUMP) need to start adding the code
to program other devices.

Subject: Generating audio tones

Hi out there'
    How do I generate reasonably clean sine waves in the 400-800Hz range.
I would like to make a "pager encoder" for motorola B codes, ie two sequential tones of 1.5 sec duration.
Tones have been selected to minimise"Harmonics" problems and so frequencies like 569.1, 634.5 and 707.3 are used
we currently use an encoder that uses a programmable divider to generate a squarewave that is "rounded" by vague filtering. This results in an output  with large variation in amplitude with frequency ie. between tone one and tone two.
The pagers don't seem too fussy and respond to the present system but there must be a better way.
Any clues?

Cheers

Yes, by far the simplest way is to use a lookup table. Since a sine is
symmetrical you only need a table for the first quadrant.

If the devices aren't too picky about wave shape than you can probably
get by with a small table. If you need higher accuracy use a larger
table and/or interpolate.

There are code examples for this on the PICList Archive site I think.
(www.piclist.com)

Hope this helps

Hi,

 You can get something approximating a sine wave by integrating a ramp
 wave. By ramp I mean a wave that goes from v+ to v- with a constant
 slope, and then back again with the same (inverted) slope.

 So you could create a function in an AVR or PIC that generates a ramp
with
 the frequency you like, then use software to integrate this function to
 get something that looks very much like a sine wave.

 Eg.
 direction = 1;
 rampval = -10;
 sineval = 0;

 LABEL loopentry;

 for a = 0 to 20
 {
   rampval += direction;

   sineval += rampval;

   delay();
 }

 direction = 0 - direction;

 goto loopentry;

 This is written in a mishmash of every programming language i can think
 of, but you get the idea. It won't give you a 'proper' sinewave but it
 will be pretty close.

 The delay() function is there to set the frequency of the tone.
Changing
 the amount of time the program spends in this function will change the
 frequency.

 This function will give a maximum of 100, and a minimum of -100 which
will
 work well with an 8-bit D-A decoder.

 The sineval value can be output directly to an 8-bit output port on
your
 chip.

 one thing to check is that the value won't 'creep' along each time the
 program is run. I would use trial and error to fix this - it's just a
 matter of how many loops you run before changing the direction
variable.

 Ben

One more newbie question

I have assembled a DT001 Rev C bd and I am trying to get it to work. SO
far I have not been successful. I believe it is just an assembly error.
Here are the symptoms.

When I power up the bd the PWR, 5V LED light up power is at 14V, 5V is
at 4.9V. Also the VPP LED is on but only dim. I look at the Q2 side of
R5 and reads @ 7V.

If I install a SIMMSTICK and flip the sw to LOAD the VDD light comes on.

The instructions say that these light should only come on momentarily.
and Flicker when programming. This does not happen. The LEDS stay on
steady. I use picprg32 to try and program and I get verify errors (
the PIC is always 3FFF.

Any clues or places to start looking ?

Thanks

I recently 'inherited' a DT.001 (rev. A) and three PIC001 simmsticks.
DonTronics web site has info on the DT.001 but next to nothing on the

got it working under 2.2.12?

Any help is appreiciated.
