Subject: ISP/SPI or DT104 vs SIMM100

Hi all

I have built a DT104 and the sample programmer cable as described in the
RunAVR project and it all worked just fine.

I now have built a SIMM100 with a AT90S/LS8535, and wish to make a similar
cable for this board, but am struggling a bit and some assistance would be
appreciated.

The DT104/runAVR cable has:

Parallel Port DT104 (via 330 ohm resistor)
===============================================
Pin 2, D0 MOSI (via 330 ohm resistor)
Pin 4, D2 RESET (via 330 ohm resistor)
Pin 5, D3 CLOCK
Pin 11, busy MISO
Pin 18-25, ground GND

Now looking at the SIMM100 diagram on J3 (ISP), I find:
MOSI OK that matches
MISO OK taht matches
RES I presume that matches with RESET (?????? help)
SCK Is this the same as CLOCK (??????? help)

There is also the LD1 LED attached to pin 3 of J3. Does this get hooked up
to anything?

Is ISP the same as SPI. The SIMM100 diagram say ISP and the DT104 say SPI.
Are they equivalent?

Thanks in advance.

Hi All.

I have worked with PICs a little in the past, programming in F84.

I did not have then my own programming-burning hardware, and I did not needed
it :)

Now, I`d like to build one, but Don`s pages are a little confusing.

Could someone just tell me where to start, and why maybe it`s better to start
using Amtel micros instead of others?

What hardware from Don, could be used to program both kind of micros.

If I have some business in mind, what is the best strategy to follow?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my little English.

Of course, the answers could be off the list, to: shopcolombiausa.net

Hi Carlos,
I firmly believe there is only one place to start right now:
The Little "rAVeR!" AVR & Basic Kit http://www.dontronics.com/dt006.html

There is not a lot of gear around that you can use for both micros,
however a few PIC/AVR programmers are starting to appear. The SimmStick
platform at least gives you the option of heading in either direction.

But really, I have been in business since 1964, and into main frame and
mini computers since about 74, and PC's if you could call them that,
around early 78, and this is as simple and as cost effective as it gets.

Sure, PICs have a good track record and an excellent applications base,
however I feel AVR's have the edge as far as newbies are concerned.

This starts the very long argument about which micro is best, and the
question should really be "which micro is best for your application"?

next year, then the year after, there will always be something bigger,
better, faster. we have all seen it before in PC's, and it's the same
with any microcontroller. You have a wish list, then when your wish list
comes true, you wish you had 3 more wishes.

You should be able to hook up a SIMM100 board to a rAVer! board in one
of two ways.

10 pin header to 10 pin header. Straight through. I'm pretty sure Lars
(SIMM100 designer) checked this,

I'll CC this message to the dealer list so that he picks up on it
anyway.

or via the Simm bus.
However if you use the simm bus, you will have to link J14 1 to 2 and 3
to 4. This is covered in the assembly instructions.

OH, The LED next to the Kanda header is a visual programming indicator
for the stk200 I believe.

Hi

I still consider myself a beginner. I fiddled a bit with Basic Stamps, then
hit on the RunAVR project from Don. In fact I think I was the first one to
buy a DT104 and get it running with AVR Basom. I found it relatively
straight forward, but still had to ask a lot of questions.

Lots of luck.

Thanks Don

But what if I want to just connect a parallel port cable from my PC. Can
this be wired into J3 in a similar manner as the SPI cable for the DT104?

OH yes, if you mean the 8 pin header, yes.

I just took mark's instructions down from the runavr page as we have
simplified it with the rAVer! board.

However if you just hook up the 5 wire circuit with or without the
resistors, you will find it will work. I know mark has got the 8 pin
header pins named in the schematic on the runavr.html page, so this
should make it simple.

Hi all,

Just got some 24LC08 chips...

I intend to use them with a DT101 board.

Is there any code around to handle the 24LC08 on the DT101?

Thanks,

There isn't a stand alone module, I guess that is what you are needing,.

The only one with rs-485 provision is the dt102.

Subject: DT006 AVR Programming under Linux?

Hi All,

I'm using the DT006 with a 90S2313 under Win98 with tavrasm as my
assembler and BASCOM-AVR to do the downloads using the Sample
Electronics parallel port programmer design. It works fine, but I'd
rather be using Linux, and in any case I'd much rather have a command
line downloader, rather than having to fiddle with the BASCOM-AVR GUI!
Tavrasm is available for Linux, but I haven't been able to spot
any Linux programming s/w for the Sample Electronics programmer. Any
ideas?

Thanks,

Carlos,
Don's pages are confusing no matter how good your English is :-)

I don't know too much about AVR vs. PIC -- I chose AVR because it
seemed faster. It probably depends on your application.
If you do decide to go with the AVR I can certainly recommend the
DT006 -- I got the kit with all the hard to find bits from Don, and
got it up with trouble at all. Aside from the bits Don gives (I mean
sells) you, all you need are a few capacitors and resistors, a 12V
plupack (AC or DC), a cable with 5 wires from a male to a female DB25
made as per the instructions, and probably a standard serial cable
between the DT006 and your PC.
For software you need BASCOM-AVR, and an assembler if you don't
want to program in Basic.
You can get all the documentation you need to understand the AVR
chips from www.atmel.com. The BASCOM-AVR docs seem a bit lacking, but
I didn't pursue that too far because I prefer assembler.

Hope this helps.

Tom

Hi all!

I started with AVR 90S2313-10... and DT006 from Dontronics.
Carefully mounted and checked the voltages, etc.
I have win95 and BASCOM demo 1.0.0.8., with a PII 266 Mhz processor.
I branched the DT006 to my LPT2 with a standard parallel cable (the same
for my external zip unit). This port is configured to 278 and Bascom
software was referred to this address.
I followed the procedure described in RunAVR page (for the dt104) and I
think that must work with the DT006 and leds D0-D4 (links 6,7,8 from J9
open)
The program I choosed is rotated.bas, and everythings seems to go well
but... when F4 is pressed a message "could not identify chip" appears.
I changed the chip, the resonator (3 legs, no capacitors) checked
continuities but...
I sended "buffer to flash rom" and I have the message "writing rotated.bas
to chip", but when I send "flash rom to buffer" I get the empty code (53 53
53) on the screen, so obviously the code was no wrote in the chip but there
is some kind of comunication with the chip.
The option "Identify chip" has the same response "could not identify chip"
Any help will be appreciated...

Hi,
In my original attempts to program a non-AVR micro I was frustrated by my parallel port being uni-directional.
the chip was in fact programmed but there was no reply from the programmer so it appeared to fail.
I eventually talked to a collegue who tried my programmer on his PC withe same result but he discovered that the chip was programmed and ran  .
That was using BASCOMLT but check anyway it may be the problem.

I'm not sure that I got it right...

Do you mean that I can *handle* a RS485 interface using a dt102?
ie in software or what, or, do I have to use a *mother board* and add the
dt102 as an *interface board*?

Well, what I mean is: I'd like to build an interface between a RS485 device
and a PC, ie. RS485<->RS232. If I can code the protocols (I hope it fits in
16F84) and *see* in on the LCD it'd be great!

Can I store the data some where, say a dt101's EEPROM?

Cheers,
Mert

Hi Leon:
My LPT2 is EPP, IRQ5. When I don´t work with microcontrollers, I branch my ZIP unit on LPT2 and it works well, so I´m sure this port is bidirectional.
May be my problem is in the parallel cable (standard cable). Today I´ll make a cable with five conductors, following the RunAVR especifications.
Thank you anyway!
