I'm getting the Author to enlarge on the versions and reasons Mike, and
I'll CC this to him for feedback also, as I'm sure others will ask
similar questions.

Hello,

The concept "showing the asm while you program in basic" is GREAT for
educational purposes, but (just a feedback):

- The Bronze Edition support very few basic instructions: only 12 against 32
for BS1, 36 for BS2 and more than 100 for Bascom AVR.
- I do not understand why the bronze edition do not support flash mcu and
the web page from Don says that "This means it now supports the PIC16F84,
which is the most common starting point for beginners." (PIC F84 isīnt a
flash mcu?)
-It would be nice more information about hardware to use the CHBC, i.e. can
I use the DT001 board?

Hi Jorge,
I have left the contents of this message intact, so i can forward it to
Bane for feedback.
and yes, we do appreciate any and all feedback of course, good bad, or
otherwise.

I have asked Bane to go into more detail regarding the compiler variants
and what is covered in each version.
He has told me that you can use an 84 in the Bronze edition, and as I
always look at any product from a newbies point of view, if it didn't
cover the 84, then it would be short of a reasonable starting point.

Perhaps Bane would like to answer the other comments either via me, or
directly to this group.

Cheers Don...

Today I had a chance to attend the ESC, San Jose. Microchip had a
nice one hour class in which they let people program a 16F873. The
application was a mini voltmeter.

At the end of the class the user was given away that cute little demo
board with PIC installed. I got one :-)

hardware yes, software no.

The 65 is old and no longer warrants a pdf file on the Microchip site.
I think the read is the same and the write requires alterations, but I
am almost guessing now.

Perhaps someone on this list has the specific differences in their head.

The 24C series is I2C compatible with SDA & SCL (2 wire interface)
while 93Cxx series is a microwire compatible (3 wire bus).

I don't think the are compatible with each other in any way (h/w or
s/w) I'll try to upload both datasheets in the files area.

The 64 had security feature that almost always got enabled by accident
when developing your code. These security feature could write protect
the device, and leave you unable to reset the feature. Pain in the butt.
The 65 has no such features. IIRC

So, basically, if the existing code is using some of the features in the
64 that are not in the 65, then it's not compat. The organisation of the
memory, page sizes are the same though.

Subject: CH Basic Compiler: New feedback

Hello Don,

Now is clear. This will be a great product!
Still a little remark, the only reference I founded about hardware necessary
to use the CH compiler was:

"Once the basic program is compiled, simply import it into Microchips freely
available MPASM or MPLAB, and you're ready to burn the memory".

People who likes Basic compilers are reluctant to Asm, MPASM and
professional tools like MPLAB (like me for instance). I wonder, does the CH
compiler work with the simple (and safe) DT001?

I think that the hex file produced by the CH compiler can burn (unless the
F84) the chip with the DT001 and the Nigel Goodwin sofware? Is this correct?

best regards

Jorge Ferrero

I'll again pass this message on intact Jorge, so that Bane can respond.
I assume that CH Basic will only produce a hex file with the assistance
of MPASM or MPLAB.
Once you get that hex file, then any decent programmer/software
combination will burn from the hex file to the chip.

This is correct, Don. The Bronze Edition produces assembly code. We are
working on hex file formats for the new compilers, so we will also add
this
to the Bronze Edition in one of the future updates.

Sandisk has some app notes for the 8051 with an interface to CF. If all you
want is memory, you might find the smartmedia modules simpler, also a bit
smaller. Sandisk has some info there too. Digi-key has some sockets for CF.

a project requirement is for interchange using CF so its a given. :)

thanks for the pointers.

Subject: Application Board: 8-digit event counter and 7-seg LED display

Hello Friends

Does any one has a design and code for an 8-digit up/down event counter with
7-seg LED display using either 16F84 or Atmel uC.

Functions: Must acceprt TTL inputs: event input, up/down input, reset input.

Ready made board will also be appreciated.

If any one interested in developing a small low cost board design for me
then please contact me. I may have to add up few more functions like counts
to EEPROM/nv memory, serial input/output, real time clock. Kindly use my
email given below for making an offer. This help will be greatly
appreciated.

Shyam,

Sounds like our EDE707 IC will fit the bill nicely. It controls up to 8
seven-segment LED's, and has built-in up/down count functionality. A
datasheet is available from our website at http://www.elabinc.com and on
CD-ROM.

Sounds excellent. Can I get your products CDs such that they can be placed
in a common display area for the Robotics Club of India members and it is
likely that many will ask for the items. I will like to stock them for the
RCI club as well as will like to use them for training.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Kindly send CDs and other info which you may
consider useful.

Regards.

Make sure that you disclose this on a public list. I need a new speedboat.
