This chip is a PQFP. I would strongly encourage you to get a board made and learn how to solder the chip yourself. A good way to practice is to get a useless PC motherboard, remove a PQFP part, clean it up and resolder it. The main problem with this will probably be the quality of the motherboard PCB. The pads will be likely to lift etc, but this is a good way to learn. Another way is to get some samples of _any_ PQFP part from a manufacturer and have a go at soldering them. I used to feel like this, but now I really hate through hole (cutting all those leads is such a nuisance). Fine pitch SMD is quite easy to solder by hand with care, patience and liquid flux. There is a great SMD soldering tutorial in an atmel app note (http://www.cygnal.com/appnotes/an014.pdf) - this was reprinted in circuit cellar recently. You could also pick up a prototyping adaptor - I bought one off the shelf from Frys in San Jose last year. It was generic and did up to 144pins I think - each pin comes out to a 0.1" spaced header. On another note... we had a programmer in India working on this project and he has dropped off of the face of the earth... We do have one of the chips he programmed for us. You have to select PROJECT->OPTIONS->XLINK->INCLUDE and then in the directory /IAR Systems/ew23/430/icc430 the file MSP430F149A.xcl (depending on which processor you're using). Hi, Here are my routines for the DS18S20, which I think is probably pretty similar. The code here is for an Atmel AT90S8515, but it should be pretty similar to the PIC code. Have a look through it, and you should get the gist of what's happening. This code is tested and working, and has been operational measuring the temperature of a Formula SAE racing car for the past 6 months or so. I have been trying to program my simmstick DT106 (16F877) using both P16PRO and WinPicProg with no sucess. Both programs act similiar. I can read and erase the pic with no errors. When I read the PIC I get all 3FFF over all the program memory and FF over all the date memory. The PIC has never been programmed succesfully before. When I try to program the pic it looks like it is actually trying to program and then at the end I get an error saying Program Error: Program: address=000 buffer=0000 device=3FFF The VPP and VDD LEDs blink on and off when programming. I also get the same error when I try to verify the PIC. It looks as if it programs the Fuses as well, however on verify it shows that they have never changed. I have gone through the FAQ in PICALLW VPP=12.8V VCC=5V VDD=5V The RED and GREEN LED on the DT001 board are off, and blink on and off when trying to program. They then turn back off after I get the error. I have checked the parallel cable and I am using the correct port. Furthermore I have traced the signals with an oscilloscope and the signals seem to be nice and sharp all the way to the correct pins of the PIC. I have checked the oscillator which looks like it is working fine. I am competly out of ideas to test and can not determine if it's the configuration of P16PRO, or the hardware. If anyone has any suggestions please email me. I have found quite a few posts with similiar problems and some seem to have fixed them with different configurations. If anyone has the DT001, DT106 with a 16F8777 PIC please send me all configurations that makes your work. Chris Dohan

I only have a PIC16F877 right now, however I ordered a second one, along with a PIC16F84. I see the all the correct signals appearing on the pins of the PIC which leads me to believe it is the PIC itself at fault. The only thing I noticed was a very low voltage on the crystal oscillator however the scope leads may have been keeping that down. We'll see what happens with the new chips. A good scope shouldn't load the crystal signals, but you don't need it running to program the chips anyway.
