Probably because he can't get it to work. It kept crashing when I tried to
use it, so I gave up and went back to V3. I told Atmel support about it, but
they didn't seem very interested.

Peter Crowcroft in HK Kitsrus.com (address above) has the 30 pin Simm
Sockets in stock. These are suitable for my SimmStick products.

He says:
Very nicely packaged.
40 sockets per plastic tray.
21 trays per carton.

So you can order in multiples of 40 direct from Peter.
Get in quick, as I will be taking the lot off his hands in 1 or 2 weeks
time, and charging you a lot more I would think :-)

Subject: PIC18FXXX comparator

Downloaded the reference manual (39500a.pdf) for PIC18 series
microcontrollers from Microchip and saw chapters 23 and 24 referring to an
analogue comparator. But the few datasheets I've seen for specific devices
have no mention of a comparator. Does anyone know which (if any) devices
have comparators in them?

Thanks in anticipation,

Subject: Problems getting the DT006 to program.

I recently purchased and assembled a DT006.

The tests described on the dontronics web page work correctly
(pressing switches 2 and 3 does light up LED's 3 and 4, and the RS232
connection works correctly too) however I cannot get any of the
programming utilities to recognise or write to the microcontroller.

I have tried a few different computers and cables, I am 100% certain
the parallel cables are good as they're used with an EPROM programmer
and a flash programmer here at work, to be certain I got hold of a
flat 25 way IDC cable and some 25 pin IDC connectors and made another
cable.

I've tried EPP and ECP parallel port settings. The BASCOM AVR demo
reports that it couldn't identify the chip and the LED's do not light
up when attempting to verify the chip.

Are there any other tests I can do to determine what the problem is?
The board and all solder points visually look ok, I've tested most of
them with a multimeter, all components are in their correct
orientations and polarities.

Did you order the complete kit with the preprogrammed AT90S2313 or have you
supplied the bits yourself as the kit usually comes with a 2313
preprogrammed running some demo code that I think flashes the LEDs.

The buttons should make the LEDs go but I'm not sure if that means the 2313
is working.

What AVR are you using and what sort of xtal or resonator are you using
because if the oscillator is not working correctly then I don't think it
will be able to programme via the parallel port type programmer.

Sounds like the DT006 doesn't it.

If you have you got a scope have a look around for life on the xtal and SPI
lines

Unless the switches and LEDs are attached to the same port/pin then it's a fair
bet that the micro is running!

Thanks Alex,

I did order the complete kit, it came with a 3 pin resonator. It came
with an ATS2313 but not preprogrammed.

I have managed to fine 1 dead link (reset on the micro socket), and
I've fixed that, but the chip still isn't recognised. 1 LED now
flashes when you attempt to verify the chip (and all the links are
installed) It still will not program.

I've check all the other links on the board with the multimeter and
they all seem ok. I might try swapping out the resonator, pity I
didn't use the 3 pin socket for it.

Leon, the switches make the LEDs light up whether there's a micro
installed or not, they just ground 1 pin of the LEDs (the others are
tied to +5v...)

OK,
If the leds light w/o the micro in circuit then they are no indication of
micro activity
From now I'm no help

Daniel,

Hey! Sounds like you have a USBSIMM (and more than a little
bit of trouble with it). Also sounds like you are using the
examples and guidelines that John Hyde has developed.

One thing that is good that I can get from this is that it
at least works on one of your PC. Why it shows up as a LAN
modem, I can only speculate.

But before we get to far, lets do this: Email me directly.
Let me know what versions of Windows you are using. We'll
try to get to the bottom of this.

Subject: Cannot program 3FFF on DT001-DT106-16F877

Hello. I have a DT001 and DT106 with a PIC 16F877. I
have compiled programs in FED Wiz-C C compiler. In one
of the programs I compiled the hex file has 3FFF at
adress 0x0003. The problem is when I prorgram this, it
programs up to address 0x0003 and then stops. This
causes a verify error on 0x0004 becuase it did not
write from 0x0004 and on. A simple fix for this is to
change the 3FFF to 0000 which I believe is a NOP
instruction. However in a new program I have data is
stored all the way at the end of the program and 3FFF
are in the middle of the program. Therefore it does
not ever write the data.

Erasing the PIC works just fine. All other programs
work and program fine. It's just this one data word
does not write correctly. I am using WinPicProg and
have determined it is not the programmer as two other
people can get my same programs working. One being on
the same hardware as I have.

Anyone ever hear of this, or have any suggestions. My
edges are nice and clean, I have the correct voltages,
13V for programming, etc. I have exhaustively been
trying to get this programmer to work for months now.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've got some stuff about RS-232 with the 2313 AVR UART on my web site. The
8535 UART will be similar.

Subject: Stability Problem with DT106

Hello,
I have a simm bus prototyping system consisting of a DT106 40pin micro
board, a DT207 power and comms board and a passive simm backplane. All I
have connected on the 40pin micro board is the crystal, the 470R resistor,
the 15pF caps to suit the crystal (C5 & C6) and the 2 10K resistors (R1 &
R2) on the MCLR line. What I find when I connect up a few LED's via wire
wrap wire, is that the micro seems to be resetting itself every 20 ms
(50Hz). the fuses are set as follows
WDT - OFF
Oscillator - HS
Power Up Timer - ON
Brown Out Detect - OFF
LVP - On
Flash Program Write - On
Background Debug - OFF
Data EE Protect - OFF
Code Protect - OFF

If I put my finger on the Vdd or Vss pins or a couple of the I/O pins, the
system becomes stable. I suspect that this is a grounding problem, any
hints as to how I can alleviate this?

Regards,
Paul Munday

As I said above asd, it doesn't have a lot to do with Electronics, but
as I have put 7 years of my life into SimmStick, and founded and
moderate this list, I figured I could drop a small off topic ad on a
friendly group, that has supported Dontronics faithfully by becoming
members of this list, and it would be understood.

I even went as far as thinking that the group may even be interested to
see what I am up to these days, and offer me some moral support.

As they say in the spam, sorry for the intrusion.
Cheers Don...

Don,

Well, you spammed us! (not really) I even ignored the first message because I thought it WAS spam. I didn't realize that it came from you.

But now that I have reread the first message, I'm interested in what you have done.

What does it have to do with SimmSticks? Nothing. And everything.

SimmSticks happen because of your efforts. If internet ordering and credit card fraud affect you, it affects availability of SimmSticks. And any effort that may go into new designs.

The note from you IS appreciated. As is all of the fine work you do for the SimmStick community.

I thought it was too. But I'll defend Don.

Don provides a service: products that span more than just SimmSticks. To provide this service he has to battle fraudulent credit card charges. Fighting this type of theft must not be easy.

I assume that Don has contacted his immediate business associates about his new endeavor. Don has also listed this service with SimmStick list members (us), some of whom run their own small businesses.

In my opinion Don's message was unobtrusive. Perhaps he could have made it a little more clear (in the original message) that he was providing this information only as a kind act.

I think anyone that saw this as spam can forgive Don. I'm willing to guess that the majority of us are grateful for all that Don does, and wish him the best of luck.

I'm thinking of getting a tray of those SIMM
connectors Don mentioned and offering at least
30 of them for sale to folks in the US.

The pricing would be something like $1 per
connector with very low first class mail
added on and fast delivery.

Are there enough of you that would buy these
connectors on this basis? Please email me
and let me know if so and about how many you'd
be getting just to give a rough idea.
