I am civil
engineer based in Lower Hutt, New Zealand specialising in structural
investigation, civil design, soil-structure interaction and earthquake
engineering. Before setting up my
consulting engineering company, Phillips & Wood Ltd, in 1986, I was the Director of Opus Central
Laboratories (formerly New Zealand Ministry of Works, Central Laboratories).
During my 35 years design and
investigation experience I have undertaken a broad range of work including
major projects related to earthquake design and risk assessment, structural
vibration analysis and control, soil-structure interaction, foundation design,
and the analysis and design of tank and underground structures. I have also
had considerable experience with advanced computer based structural analysis
and design.
My recent involvement with soil-structure
interaction projects includes:
·
Research project for Transit New
Zealand on the lateral load performance of bridge pile foundations. This
involved site testing of completed piers and foundations during the
construction of four major bridges.
·
Research project for SEQUAD
Consultants, San Diego, California on the effects of the soil interaction of
large concrete tank foundations on their earthquake response.
·
Specialist consultant to Reinforced Earth Ltd (NZ) for the
seismic analysis of reinforced earth bridge abutments used on major highway
bridges, and for the analysis and design of other major reinforced earth
structures in New Zealand.
·
Commissioned by Reinforced Earth Pty Ltd (Australia) to
review in-house finite element analysis procedures and to improve seismic
design methods for TechSpan precast concrete underground arch structures. Detailed report, including recommendations
for improving seismic design procedures was completed in August, 2000.
·
Presentation of paper titled: “Seismic
Analysis of Buried Arch Structures,”
(co-authored with D A Jenkins, Interactive Design Services), to 12th
World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Auckland, February, 2000.
·
Review and independent check analyses for Reinforced Earth
Pty Ltd (Australia) of gravity and earthquake load design for the Abernethy
Road Overpass, Perth, underground TechSpan arch structure.
·
Peer Review for Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner, Wellington,
of the findings of a project carried out by them for Transit New Zealand on “Guidelines for Design and Construction of
Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Structures in New Zealand”.
