Salt Pan Revisited

The Saltpan module was the first expansion beyond the original Anunaka layout. The ground cover was Woodland Scenic which over the years has faded quite dramatically, to the extent that once the new adjoining River Dutton and Wirrandra modules were sceniced, it looked quite out of place. In addition, the salt pans themselves were far too deep to represent the typical salt pan found on the Eyre Peninsula, which is almost level with the surrounding land.

With the upcoming BRMA Convention layout tour (November 2004) I decided that a revamp of Saltpan was in order

Saltpan - Work in Progress - 20 June 2004

Above you can see Saltpan showing the faded colours towards the centre, with the newly sceniced areas at each end. Actually, the faded colour around the saltpan is probably reasonable as the salt affects the vegetation and ground cover closer to the pan. At the time of taking these photos, I had cut 1/4" ply panels to fit into the pans, and had cut the previous scenic layer around the nearer pan.
When I cut out the old scenery I discovered that I had applied a layer of plaster to form the bed of the pan, which when combined with successive layers of white "salt" scatter meant I needed a thicker base to bring the bed of the saltpan up to the height I wanted. On the left (above) you can see a couple of squares of ply glued in place to raise the bed, and on the right you can see where I have added some styrofoam to cover the fact that the bed of the salt pan is now higher than some of the surrounding land!

Saltpan - Back in the Layout - 29 June 2004

The Saltpan module has now been inserted back into the layout. It's not finished yet - the pans themselves are only painted white and have no scatter material of any sort - but the general appearance is much better. The saltpans are much shallower now, wich is a much better appearance, and the colour of the scenery matches the adjoining modules.
