Quotes from Carole's Talk

In our August meting Carole Wigg gave us a fascinating talk on MAPW (Medical Association for the Prevention of War)  which elicited much discussion.

The following two quotes from her talk, we thought were worth recording.

Martin Luther King Jnr : "Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power.  We have guided missiles and misguided men."

Prime Minister John Howard on November 9 2002 : "We cannot allow weapons of mass destruction to remain in the hands of a country which in the past has demonstrated a willingness to use those weapons."

Country Dance

This was a very successful and enjoyable evening. Ruth would like to thank her team especially Jan Aitken, Heather Smith, Don Stokes, Ant Clark for his incredible collection for the silent auction and to Michael Pender for the calling.

We raised $4,300 and  our only expense was for the hire of the hall. The Dance was a lot less work than our usual Winter Solstice Dinner and raised just as much money. It would be interesting to have your feedback on this event.

Well Done everyone !

Date: Wednesday 6th September

The difficulties that existed between white and Aboriginal Australians during the mid 20th century are depicted in a compelling new book that revisits the story of bushman Daryl Tonkin, who lived among Aboriginal timber workers in the great Gippsland forest in the 1950s and 1960s.

Jackson's Track Revisited is the sequel to the highly acclaimed and award-winning book Jackosn's Track: memoir of a Dreamtime Place written by Carolyn Landon and Daryl Tonkin. In it Carolyn Landon returns to the story of
Daryl Tonkin, but this time told from the perspective of his daughter Pauline Mullett.

Landon explores the motives of all the players in Daryl's story, and even revisits Daryl's own memories. The role of assimilation policies, the Victorian Aborigines Welfare Board and the Victorian Aborigines Advancement League are investigated. With its different ways of understanding and telling history,
Jackson's Track Revisited is about classic historiographical concerns - the status of memory, archives, oral history and the importance of understanding history as multiple stories.

Miranda Armstrong will introduce the evening. Miranda has worked with First Nations teachers in Canada. Following the birth of her Gamillaroi Aborigine granddaughter, she has become intensely involved in keeping the indigenous past alive.
