Richard Simpson
Talking on
Oxfam's Humanitarian Unit

Richard Simpson is the emergencies coordinator for Southern Africa and is the focal point of humanitarian work in that region. He also supports Oxfam international affiliates where Oxfam Australia is not working such as the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.

Richard's talk will be on the Emergencies Unit at Oxfam Australia; what we do and how we support Oxfam Australia's development work. He will also give an overview of the work Oxfam is doing in Darfur and present a recent monitoring visit to a project in Turkana, Kenya that is working to break a cycle of aid dependency though new and innovative relief techniques.

Response from Jenny Macklin

Following Jenny Macklin's recent visit to the group a letter of thanks was sent to her which also included our expression of concern about the lack of critical response to the Government's proposal to stock child abuse amongst indigenous children in NT.

Jenny responded to our letter prior to the presentation and passing of the legislation saying, in part:
"Labor believes that the safety of children is paramount and has given in-principle, bipartisan support to the Government's recent initiative.

We will provide a detailed response to the Federal Government's measures when any draft legislation has been drafted and made available. ……  The test that Labor will apply to this legislation is whether it helps to make children safe.

Federal Labor believes that we need both an urgent and long-term approach to secure the safety and well-being of children at risk.  We have to back positive community leadership and put in place the building blocks for a more sustainable future in remote areas."

She then went on to outline commitments made in the areas of early childhood development, more Federal Police and counsellors.

If anyone would like a copy of the letter, please contact Stephen Lavender
