CHRISTINA HILL
Extractive Industries Advocacy Officer
Oxfam Australia
8:00pm Friday 15th February 2008
Eltham Living and Learning Centre
739 Main Rd Eltham

Welcome to the first newsletter for the Diamond Valley Oxfam group for 2008.

To start the year rolling Carole has arranged for Shanta Martin's colleague Christina Hill to come to the next meeting to talk about the mining ombudsman's work.

Christina plans to talk about 2 things - the Mining Ombudsman project (focussing on 1 of the current cases) and the Women and Mining Project.

The aim of Oxfam's work is to "assist communities affected by extractive industries have the ability and opportunity to claim their rights and protect their livelihoods".

The Mining Ombudsman:

  • works with communities to increase their capacity to advocate for change and providing a space for community voices to be heard,

  • puts pressure on mining companies and industry bodies to adopt higher environmental and social standards in their operations overseas, and

  • puts pressure on governments to implement initiatives to encourage respect for human rights.

The Women and Mining project recognises that the impacts of mining operations are not gender neutral.  Women are often excluded from the economic benefits of mining and bear the burden of many of the negative social and environmental impacts of mining.  The Women and Mining Project works with women from mine affected communities assisting them to put pressure on mining companies, and to become more involved in community decision making processes.

I hope you can make it to this informative talk.
