Letter to the Leader of the Opposition
Dr Brendan Neslon
Re: Apology to Aboriginal People
By Val Byers

Dr.Brendan Nelson. M P
Leader of the Opposition.

Congratulations for the bi-partisan position taken by you as Leader of the Opposition regarding the apology to aboriginal people in Parliament this week. The co-operative attitude taken on this significant national occasion is refreshing and heartening and continues with your acceptance of the offer to co-chair The Commission on Indigenous Housing with the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. May the work to address the poverty, suffering and lack of justice and equal opportunity experienced by many aboriginal people today, continue in the same bipartisan spirit.

Eastern Suburbs
Walk Against Want
By Pat Cameron

The walk was well advertised in our area with a photo of Ananda Chanda and information in The Diamond Valley Weekly. We also had  photos of Susan Mackay and her family with  info about the Walk in the Diamond Valley Leader.

We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day for the walk. I spent the morning at one of the tables and was very impressed by the efficient organisation as it swung into action to greet the many walkers who were arriving for an early start.

The organisers were hopeful that they would at least equal, if not better, last year's effort. I've learnt that $31.000 has been pledged this year and the group expects that in the end, based on previous experience, more will be received. It's a good result.

Bush Dance

Pat Cameron has acquired a very handsome hamper chock-a-block full of every conceivable item associated with a barbecue - tools etc, even a bottle of red. It is well presented and would make a good prize to be raffled at the Bush Dance.

Pat will be away until the 16th of May and is unsure if she will be able to make it to the May meeting. Pat is wondering if members would like to discuss arrangements for the Bush Dance at the May meeting.

Diamond Valley Oxfam Bookfair
Saturday October 18th

We are still looking for good books for the 2008 Bookfair. While Beth Pender, Stephen Lavender and Pat Cameron are away, the keys to the dungeon at Eltham Library are with Marguerite Marshall and Jenni Ambridge (9439 6071).

Pat Cameron has already done several trips to receive books for our sale. If you know anybody who has books to donate, please give them our phone numbers and Marguerite or Jenni will arrange a meeting time.
