Holroyd's Hotshotz

This very popular band has been around the Sydney scene since the mid-1970s in various formats, and is a very entertaining group which plays that good old toe-tapping Dixieland, mixed in with some Blues and Swing, and is a long-time favourite of the dancers at many Clubs & Venues

In addition to their regular appearances at venues from Sydney to Newcastle and Wollongong to the Blue Mountains, Holroyd's Hotshotz often play for private functions such as Weddings, Harbour Cruises and Corporate Events as well as appearing at various Jazz Festivals.

Holroyd's Hotshotz play a happy toe-tapping mixture of Trad & Dixie jazz standards, pop songs of yesteryear and a variety of music from the 20s, 30s and 40s. Don't miss them!

It's a five piece band and the leader is Eric Holroyd on Trumpet & Vocals; Mike Poore on Trombone; Dennis Tonge on Banjo & Vocals; Mal Quine on Clarinet & Tenor Sax; with Stan Kenton on String Bass.

Holroyd's Hotshotz Holroyd's HotshotzMal Quine (Clarinet & Tenor Sax) is well known to Australian jazz fans through his performances with Ozz Jazz and the Rockdale Big Band. Mal is a regular performer at many Australian Jazz Festivals such as Merimbula, Dubbo, Halls Gap and others, also playing at the annual Australian Jazz Convention. His musical tastes and expertise range from early Classic Jazz to Mainstream and he is a very adept player. Is it my imagination, or is this Mal moonlighting as Ozzy Osbourne?

Holroyd's HotshotzEric Holroyd plays a strong, swinging trumpet lead as well as handling a lot of the vocals, and his highly individual style has bits of Bix, a little of Louis, a modicum of Muggsy, and a great deal of Eric himself. Eric's CV includes stints with the Abbey Jazz Band, Tom Baker's San Francisco Jazz Band, New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra, Graeme Bell's All Stars, Café Society Orchestra and many more, including his own Red Nichols tribute band: Eric Holroyd's Five Pennies. From 2000 – 2002 Eric played with the US-based 10th Avenue Jazz Band and toured with them all over USA and UK.

Holroyd's Hotshotz Mike Poore (Trombone)moved to Sydney some years ago from Melbourne where he was a long time member of the Storyville Jazz Band among others. Since coming to Sydney he has played with the Hotshotz and Mike Hallam's Hot Six, as well as freelancing all around the musical scene. He is a very competent musician and always adds a touch of humour to the band's performances.

Holroyd's HotshotzDennis Tonge (Banjo & Vocals) was a professional musician during the UK Trad Boom in Manchester (where he played with the Red River Jazz Band, and the Dallas Jazz Band) and London where he played with many well known bands – including the Mike Peters Florida Jazz Men, the Davey Keir Jazz Men and the Swamp Fever Jazz Band. Since coming to Australia in the 1960s he has played with many fine bands too, being a founder member of the Noel Crow Band in the 70s, and then playing with the Abbey Jazz Band for ten years or so. He is a driving banjo player and a good vocalist too.

Holroyd's Hotshotz Stan Kenton (String Bass) is the other member of this wonderful rhythm section and he is another fine musician.

Stan has done much theatre and Symphony work, and was for some years a member of the great Graeme Bell's All Stars.

In his younger days Stan played tuba in the Czech Army Band but confines himself to String Bass nowadays.

He has a great soloing style, and occasionally emulates 'Slam Stewart' by singing along with the improvised line that he's playing.
