Stargazers
Week 2001 |
Welcome to Stargazers Week. Once again the skies above the Lammington Plateau in the Gold Coast Hinterland are the deepest of blue during the day, while the evening skies blaze with the Milky Way and Mars rising toward the Zenith.
They're baaack. Stargazers Weeks' resident astronomers arrive and set up at O'Reilly's Guesthouse lawn. Tony Surma-Hawes and Brendan Downs set up the O'Reilly's 8" LX200. |
Brendan carefully aligns the finder of the 8" as it will be in intense use through the coming week... either that or he's keeping an eye on his jaffers in his room. |
Sun Time! Anne-Louise Surma-Hawes sets up our 4" Unitron to project the solar image. |
Even the local wild life takes an interest in Stargazers week... or perhaps it is the sultanas in Anne-Louises' hand |
Direct from Canberra, Peter and Judy Bobroff (of the Herald/Bobroff Star Atlas) have made the journey with their 20" Galaxy Optics Dobsonian. Yes, the truss made the trip on the roof of their Nimbus... hitchhikers probably don't fare any better. |
The heart of Peters' telescope is the mirror, seen here prior to attaching of the truss. |

Although Tony is helping Peter assemble the 'scope, it normally only takes Peter to setup in 15 minutes, the only help required is the setting of the mirror box, and that can be done as a one person operation |

The sight of this 'scope attracts a band of onlookers... is it Modern Art, or the latest military secret weapon? |

Ready to go... roll on the night. |
With the sunset comes the desire to visit the Sunset Bar and indulge in Happy Hour... half price cocktails. When was the last time you had an Ugly Astronomer? |
