Snout,
The Fauves, Spdfgh - Corner Hotel
- by Anthony Carew
Although slotting them alongside Australia's other two favourite pop three-pieces musically is fraught with danger, on stage Snout seem to perform from the same Pete Townsend exercise video. The hips, the hops, the jumps.... the windmill. Snout spent a lot of time musing on the ole faves (I've Got Clean Hands, Greenwich Meridian Time etc.), and pulled out a near-requisite cover (Paperback Writer), but it was the transgressional dynamics of the more recent moments o' Snout that shined the light. ie. Matter Baby, and Keep 'Em Guessing. A large sour note was that after about two tracks the request-fest started. "Cromagnonman" someone whined. Maybe Snout should've played it then and there so that person could fuck off home. But for all the quirks and perks of the being-launched The New Pop Dialogue, live Snout sunk back into being just another pop band, albeit a rather great and enjoyable pop band. But there is certainly enough in the Snout kit to well and truly rock on any night, which they did.
