APPLE CROSS THREE, SNOUT, Annandale, 5th October 1995

The company is great, the red wine is going down a treat and Snout are playing at the Annandale with the Applecross Three. Something very, very good and important is happening. Obviously. Why else would there be 350 odd people crammed into the Annandale watching Snout at 9pm on a Thursday? Snout are great, you can't think that they don't deserve to have a strong audience, but any secret You Am I gig ends up not being a secret very quickly. It should have been obvious to any You Am I fan that the pseudonym the Applecross Three comes from "The Applecross Wing Commander" on Hi Fi Way. And if you didn't figure it out, you will probably live to regret it: A lot. The three best shows this scribbler has seen all year have been You Am I shows, and this third instalment was by far the best.

However There was another band that should not be lost in the adrenalin rush of You Am I fever - that band is Snout, and if there was a more suitable support band for such an auspicious occasion then Richard Stubbs isn't a dick. The way they rendered "Mr. Tambourine Man" was so sublime - even without the extra guitars that made the Byrds so incredibly brilliant - that full and immediate attention was necessary. Fuck Galaga, this is rock & roll. "Night & Day" and the title track from their album What's That Sound? kicked like Eric Cantona from Manchester United, and add to that bassist Ross, guitarist Greg and drummer Ewan's palpable rock spunk and you've got S.T.Y.L.E.
