Snout were next to perform,
and while I'm not one for the practice of band spotting, milling around
the bar were most members of Custard. Perhaps this quietly spoken Melbourne
three-piece was the reason Dave and the Custard entourage were gathered
in numbers. Custard shared a bill with them and Pollyanna at the Corner
Hotel in Richmond only a couple of months ago so maybe the Snout sound is
still tickling their music receptors. And reason enough too, Snout have
this ability to transport you to another time and place through moody guitar
phases and at times hauntingly melodic vocals. Ross McLennan, brother of
Link Meanie, plays a crazy looking bass and leads the vocals in a mesmoronic
state for most of the set. To say the lad was energetic on stage would be
a gross understatement. Having listened to their recorded stuff before coming
to the gig I was expecting an overly clean sound but I was glad to see the
boys rough things up for their live set. Tracks like 'Beat Goes On' and
'What's That Sound?' were superb and their last single 'Night and Day' was
something all together else. They finished the set with the new single,
'Cromagnonman', and considering they didn't touch any of the other four
tracks from their new EP of the same name, Snout walked off stage exhausted
but with music in reserve.
