Garth Gaudry

A little personal background

I was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1941. My father was a schoolteacher who began teaching at the age of 13. He taught for over 50 years, his last appointment being as Headmaster of Gatton Primary School. My sister, Lois, was born two years earlier than me. She became a secondary school teacher of commercial subjects before her marriage. Both my parents came from modest family backgrounds. My father's own father died when he was only 11, and my grandmother had a difficult life bringing up four children, in their home town of Clermont, Queensland.

I am descended from the famous First Fleet couple Henry Kable and Susannah Holmes. They were married in the first European wedding ceremony in the new colony, in February 1788. Their daughter Diana (b. 5 December 1788) was the first white child born in Australia to survive to maturity. She married William Littleton Gaudry in 1809. The story of Henry and Susannah Kable is remarkable. They had been transported as convicts who had had an illegitimate child, also called Henry Kable, whilst in Norfolk prison. That they were able to travel together on the "Friendship" in the First Fleet was due to the kind intervention of Lord Sydney. He had received representations from the citizens of London about the plight of the young couple and child who would otherwise have been separated.

My own family consists of my wife Patricia (née Coe), daughters Kerry Catherine and Rebecca Louise, and son Peter Littleton Kable. My wife and I live in Sydney. Telephone: (02) 9498 7773. Prior to 1994 we lived in Adelaide for 21 years. By profession, I am a mathematician. I am currently Director of the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM).

The Gaudry family tree

The Gaudry family tree is close to being complete up to the present day. Most of the research and work on the tree was done by my wife Patricia, with help from many Gaudry family members whom she contacted. I have brought some aspects of it up-to-date recently. We would be pleased to hear from other members of the Gaudry or Kable families, especially about births, deaths and marriages that have occurred since 1970. Send me an We are also happy to make available the background information we have in addition to the tree itself. Please let me know of any dead links on this site.

In the meantime, take a look at my own family and forebears, going back to Henry Kable and Susannah Holmes. You can trace other branches of the tree downwards from Henry and Susannah Kable, but be aware that some of these are incomplete, and possibly inaccurate, at this stage. If you find your name on the public version of the tree, and would prefer that it not be there, please let me know and I shall remove it.

Diana Gaudry née Kable married John Teale following the death of William Littleton Gaudry. I am revising the merged Kable+Gaudry+Teale tree and shall upload the new version shortly. Anyone who would like the present version should contact me directly.

I have also prepared a merged Gaudry/Booty tree showing the descendants of George Booty and Emmeline Amelia Susannah Gaudry together with the Gaudry tree going back to Henry Kable and Susannah Holmes. I am grateful to Jim Leabeater and Jan Allen for the Booty family data.

The attractive family card layout of these trees was produced using Reunion software for the Macintosh. In case you are creating a family tree that can be traced back to a point on mine, I am making my raw data available here in Gedcom 5.5 format. You can download this in Macintosh and Windows formats and then import it into your favourite genealogy program. The Gedcom data for the Gaudry/Booty tree is also available in Mac format and Windows format .
