Overland to Australia
| Leaving London in May, 1973, I went "overland" to Australia, and arrived in Freemantle on the 1st if September, almost half a year later. The trip by bus went though France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and then to Thailand by air, train through Malaysia to Singapore, and then by boat on the SS Eastern Queen, and from Fremantle, Western Australia, to Sydney on the Indian-Pacific. |
Europe and Turkey

Castle gate at Salzburg, Mozart and music town. A visit to the Hallein salt mines (hence Salzburg) is a hair-raising experience. No cable cars, just slide down the slipery dip with four heavyweights in back of you, and put on a boilersuit to avoid friction burns! |

Mending the nets at Kevala, a Greek fishing village. |
The Dardanelles, in Turkey, sad scene of the ANZAC invasion, with the thousands of little white crosses in neat rows on a hillside nearby. |
The famous Hagia Sophia church (Saint Sophia) in Istanbul (Constantinople) which is now a mosque, and the minarets were added later. |
Here it is, the famous archeological tourist site of Troy - if the sign in the foreground is illegible, it says remains famous wooden horse and you can buy bits of it at a premium price! |

The strange formations of sandstone at Cappadocia, or Gorome. These wonderful fairyland caves and pinnacles are sites of the early Christians, and contain many beautiful murals. Many are still inhabited by Turkish farmers and shepherds. To get into them, there are handholds and footholds carved in the faces of the stone, which is extremely soft and porous. |

Looking out from the magnificent amphitheatre of Ephesus. |

The strange limestone terraces at Pammukale, known as the cotton wool castle.A good place to spend the afternoon in 30C heat, floating in one of the tepid springs to cool down. This is a formation not unlike the New Zealand Pink and White Terraces that blew up in a volcanic eruption early this century. |
