Behind the celebrant is a table with a length of silk, a chalice or cup and a pitcher filled with wine and an oak branch.
Celebrant: Illana and Stephen have been together for sometime now. Today is the day for them to choose if they will stay together.
Illana and Stephen turn, back to back, facing neither the celebrant nor the guests.
Celebrant: If you choose to part, walk away. If you choose to stay together, face each other and kiss.
Celebrant: Stephen and Illana have chosen to stay together.
They have asked that a friend read to us a short description of what that decision means to them. I now ask Sue Wedgwood to share that with us.
Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth for each other.
Now you will feel no loneliness,
For each of you will be a companion to the other.
Now you are two persons,
But there are three of you;
Your individual lives and your life together.
May beauty surround you both,
On the journey ahead and through all the years.
May happiness be your companion,
To the place where the river meets the sun.
Go now to your dwelling,
To enter into the days of your life together.
And may your days be good,
And long upon the earth.
The celebrant pours the wine into the cup and hands it to the bride,
who takes a sip and hands it to the groom who,
takes a sip, and hands it back to the celebrant.
Illana: Stephen, I give you this ring as a symbol that I am bound to you always, through my love, heart and soul.
Stephen: Illana, I give you this ring as a symbol that I am bound to you always, through my love, heart and soul.
The celebrant then holds up the silk.
Celebrant: Your open hands placed over one another represent your hearts, the silk represents the belief which binds you together.
Celebrant: Belief in your heart is a testament to the power of love and compassion.
Celebrant: Belief in your heart will always guide your marriage and allow the power of love to grow, multiply and strengthen.
The celebrant then binds together their hands by wrapping the silk around them. Finishing with a reef knot.
Illana: Stephen, with you love means happiness and freedom. Freedom to love you without judgement and freedom to be yours while maintaining the very soul of me. I bind myself to you and you alone.
Stephen: Illana, you are my happiness. I bind myself to you and you alone.
