1974 Pontiac Transam 455 - Page 6 - Rear Axle Project Stick Shift
After had the car on the road for a few months unfortunately I discovered that my TH400 auto transmission is tired, has a major oil leak that I can't seem to find, and generally needs a rebuild.
Muscle cars should be manual anyway and luckily I was able to obtain most of the parts for a full manual conversion from my mate Greg at Classic Oz Wreck. I scored a Pontiac flywheel and bell housing, and a wide ratio Muncie M20 4 speed 'fine spline' transmission with a Hurst shifter, which is correct for the car. I hope to install these and complete the conversion to 4 speed manual trans as time permits, but it looks like a fairly decent job that will take some time and effort.
The diff pinion seal was also leaking drops of oil onto my garage floor!
In late Feb 2006 I took the car off the road to start to look at these problems. The rear axle has now been completely rebuilt by Craft Diffs at Granville, and is waiting for me to refit it. The gears have been changed from 2.7 to 3.5, with new wheel bearing and new axles to go in (as the old ones were rooted). One of the rear discs was cracked so there's new rotors from DBA and a caliper rebuild in progress too. There's generally a lot of work being done around the rear end right now, it was all in an absolutely terrible state when I had a close look at it all. I'll put up some more pics soon.
As of 2 April 2006 it's still off the road, a work in progress. Unfortunately I haven't yet touched the auto or the manual conversion side of it...
