After the Tears - Parents talk about raising a child with a disability by Robin Simons

"After the Tears helped me immensely! It gave me hope that I could not only survive, but also enjoy life again. Before I read this book, I felt like life for all of us (in my family) was so bleak, but after reading it, I actually felt PRIVILEGED to be able to care for a child like Mary. It really changed my whole perception of the care-giver role. It came at the right time for me. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has just gotten a diagnosis. It's better a couple of months later."

New and expanded chapters have been added to explore the latest care issues including prematurity, early intervention, legal rights, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, genetic syndromes, and changes in health. Not exclusively for care-givers, this guide is for anyone who seeks clear, user-friendly information for working with children with disabilities."

The Power of the Powerless by Christopher de Vinck

A close friend of mine gave me the book "The Power of the Powerless" by Christopher de Vinck. Chris had a brother with severe physical and mental handicaps. His family took care of him in their home for 33 years. The book is about his brother and other children/adults that can be considered powerless because they cannot interact with the world in "normal" ways and need to be taken care of their whole life. The theme of the book is how these individuals powerfully changed the lives of the people who raised them, loved them, and cared for them.

Dave spoke at Erin's funeral saying how impossible it would have been for Erin to have gotten out of her brief life what she gave to others. Her life positively changed us, our friends and families, in ways we don't yet know or understand. Her life gave us a new appreciation for our loved ones, life itself and God's love for us. Dave said "she increased our capacity to love." and that is only one thing.

Each one of us brought into this world a living angel. The power of the powerless is amazing. It is these thoughts that comfort me (most of the time) when I think of Erin's brief life.

The book is an easy read for those of us with hectic lives. I highly recommend it.

CHANGED BY A CHILD: Companion Notes For Parents of a Child With a Disability by Barbara Gill

One of the mums on the Trisomy Listserv who has been caring for a daughter with Trisomy 18 for over 20 years sent me a copy of this book for my birthday. She said it was the most practical support that she could give me day to day, and the closest thing to a daily hug that she could think of - she was right.

No matter what is happening in my life I can pick up this book and literally just open a page and find a very down to earth rainbow......

Just Like Everybody Else
by Jim Pierson, Joni Eareckson Tada, Kathy Parks (Illustrator)

When Derek's teacher announces that a child with cerebral palsy will joining their class, Derek worries about what to do or what to say to her. On an outing with his grandfather, Derek learns how people with special needs are different, yet the same. A good book to use as a springboard to talk to children about persons with special needs.

Each of us knows someone who is hearing, visually, or mentally impaired, or physically disabled. Millions more suffer from invisible disabilities that can be just as devastating. Writing from her own experience as a person with a disability, Joni Eareckson Tada joins with her fellow disability advocate, Steve Jensen, to share how you can overcome obstacles that have kept you from becoming friends with those who may be limited by their bodies or their circumstances.

Joni shows you how to build mutually fulfilling relationships based on insights into how Jesus related to individuals with disabilities. She also offers story after story of the hope and joy of those who've crossed the barriers, from either direction, and found a lifetime of friends.

Sensitive and practical, this book openly discusses mental and emotional obstacles to effective communication between people with and without disabilities and examines ways to become more at ease with the concept of disability. Featuring activities and exercises that encourage self-examination, this guide helps people to create more enriching personal relationships and to work toward a fully inclusive society.
