As soon as I heard Last Song on the Kagefumi dvd I knew it would
be released as a single. It was one of the two standout songs on
that dvd, and a most beautifully crafted and exciting song. The
version on the single is quite a bit longer than the live one, and
a little more laid back too, but it's still a very alluring song.
The extra length has bothered some people but personally I prefer
longer songs, so it didn't worry me at all. Single comes with a
dvd of the Last Song PV, which is a black and white video filmed
on a beach in which not much really happens except Kiyo looking
very pretty and standing in what looks like a metal box, or perhaps
a doorway when the back is missing. A door into the future perhaps.
I expect he needed some shelter from the wind to smoke the inevitable
cigarette. It finally ends with him face down on the sand pawing
at a (dead?) butterfly.
Something important has changed since Poetry and I think it's to
do with heart. His emotions are now fully engaged in the music,
which makes all the difference. He's always been special, but now...
I'd have to say this might well be one of my favourite Kiyoharu
releases of all time and it all fits together so well, each song
leading you into the next so that by the end you are in a complete
trance.
1. Last Song -最後の詞-
Last Song ~Saigo no Uta~
Joyous and very hopeful in mood. I get the feeling of having gone
through a long dark night of the soul and emerging into a beautiful
new dawn. You can still feel the lingering melancholy from the past,
but that just adds to the flavour of this exquisite song. I have
listened to it dozens of times now and I am still as much in love
with it as ever.
2. Bouncy
"I wanna feel cult. To freedom To Freedom
I make you feel cult. In your eyes In your eyes
I wanna feel cult. To freedom To Freedom
I wanna feel cult. For freedom to my last game."
A little darker with a very subtle and addicting melody. It took
two listens to real hook me, but now I love it. Shuffly and bottom
heavy with some really stunning guitar work.
3. Sitar
A truly wonderful song and my favourite on the single. When I first
heard this on the SADS 13 live tour dvd, I was really impressed,
but this version is much much better still. The singing is so heartfelt
and pure and the sitar riffs blend in stunningly (both the sitar
and the guitar parts are by Sato Taiji from Theatrebrook who also
played on Poetry). There is so much energy and passion on display
here :o Kiyoharu is connecting emotionally here more strongly than
ever which really is saying something. Again the basic mood is euphoric
and upbeat, although you can always feel the sadness as well. It
is this perfect paradox that makes his music so powerful...the laughter
and the tears at the same time.
