Singing That Poetry

translation by Kibou Tokumei

If you want to be free

It is necessary to taste fresh bitterness

If I betray all, then my heart will hurt

But I do not forget wonderful poetry today either

Enjoying holy fear

Remembering the wonderful Heaven

That is seen when I jump down from the sofa of suede

I closed my eyes

Singing that poetry, I pretended to have been hurt

By something had only changed a little

Singing that poetry, I pretended to have been hurt

Something has only changed a little

I already became free

And have the guitar of yearning today

If I betray others, then my heart will hurt

I want to sing beautiful poetry all the time

When shaking off the frequent fear

And wearing the suit of corduroy

The Heaven of which I wanted to see more that night

spread there

Singing that poetry, I pretended to have been hurt

By something which had only changed a little

When I sang that poetry, I was able to feel happy

Even if I knew the scenery was different from before

Whispering with holy insanity

The petal danced at the soft sofa

Singing that poetry, I pretended to have been hurt

Blowing in the wind that saves me gently

The words that are left last of that poetry

Now, it has only become blurred.

At the moment I'm feeling like this is my favourite of all Kiyoharus' albums. The new songs are as good or better than anything he's ever written. They have all the power we expect from him but sound much more relaxed and confident. One thing I've always loved about Kiyoharu is his ability to transform, and the fact that he is experimenting here with new styles and sounds I find very enjoyable.
In my reviews I some times pick out Western artists who remind me of certain songs. This doesn't mean I think Kiyo is "copying" anyone. In fact I think he is one of the most original performers I've ever seen or heard.
If you don't get a first press of this album you are going to regret it, so I decided to scan my copy of 35X (Jan-Feb) for decoration, instead of the very cute booklet which comes with it :P
Thanks to quothraven for the translations.

1.唯一遠くへ
Yuitsu Tooku e

To An Only Long Distance
"I lost, I know, I hope, I thought"
I lost my mind listening to this song..it wanders off on a great adventure. Which is amazing. This song has the ambience of a moment in time that changes your whole existance. Ken from L'arc en Ciel and Sons of All Pussys is the guest guitarist on this one.

English Lyrics

2. 暗いくちづけ
Kurai Kuchizuke

Dark Kiss
This one brings me back to earth. Sensual bass, intricate intelligent guitar from legendary jrocker Morrie (singer of Dead End) building the tension throughout the song. It pauses totally three times and moves up a gear...mmmm very suggestive..is the last part actually part of a Sads song or am I imagining it? Definate orgasmic tone to that last 30 seconds or so...LOL!!

English Lyrics

3.
Yami

The Darkness
I love the way these songs all fit together so well.
Any left over tension from the last song is quickly resolved in this warm blissful bath of a song. A song fit for summoning Moon Goddesses and floating off down the Nile with them. Lots of cellos and mystical stuff.

English Lyrics

Drool! Effortless brilliance. I LOVE this song!
The free man says goodbye to his fears and limitations and sets out on the great journey.

English Lyrics

5. Melancholy
Once he is on the road, the world and all it's magic are his for the taking. Sugizos violin is very sweet :) Seems he has talent after all. Pleeeeeeez give us a PV for this lovely song!

6. オーロラ
Aurora

So good to have this on cd at last. I still love it as much as I did when it was released. I haven't seen him get it quite right live yet. Can't blame him though, it is very tricky....

7. 退廃ギャラリー
Taihai Gallery

Corruption Gallery
"You May Be My Light"
This song is both irritating and adorable. The crab, with a brittle jazzy shell and a soft sweet centre. I'll admit this might be one I might end up fast forwarding.

8. Emily
Emily is the queen of the unbelievers :P It is a good live song and it has a nice Levellers style fiddle part. Still don't like it much though. Why?

9. あの詩を歌って

Singing That Poetry
English translation
Heh I sometimes wonder why I review albums I don't understand the words to :D I guess it is because if I don't do it then no-one else will. And that would be a terrible shame when these songs are so very cool. This lovely song is many peoples favourite and it has a brilliant vocal melody. Theatre Brook guitarist Sato Taiji does spacey Steve Hillage-style guitar (digital delay and wah! pedal) which suits it very well.

10. Perfume
So many gorgeous songs on this album but this could possibly be my favourite. I want it played at my funeral.
The guitars in this have such warm earthy nostalgic ambience.

11. Revolver
Scarlet Revoloover XD
Jyuichi Morishige from Ziggy provides some great guest vocals. Singing together these two are the sex :D Lots of Hendrix, lots of James Brown. This is a retro fun song. You can see another Hendrix tribute in the photo on the back cover of the booklet, which is inspired by his Shadow picture..

12. 飛行船
Hikou Fune

Air Ship
At ten minutes this is a long song but I am loving every second of it. There is a real psychedelic awareness going on in this whole album. He really goes off on one here. And then it all just ends suddenly...
