There are no spoilers in this one because I'll post stuff about the tapings in a separate message. Don't worry, there's still stuff about our favorite improvisors in here. :-) On Thursday night, we went to the Improv where the cast of DCS usually performs with some friends. Unfortunately, they sold out early. But all was not lost, because Brad was standing outside in a monkey t-shirt. He asked if we were there to watch the show and when we told him we couldn't get tickets, he pulled some strings and got us in--for free! What an absoulute sweetheart. And, no, Ashley wasn't with us. One of us also got a fabulous picture outside the Improv with Ryan and Brad before the show. Anyway, Ryan and Brad were the only guys from WL there that night. The people who went to Vegas will remember Julie Larson and Sean Masterson(?). Rick Overton (some of you may have seen him before--I think he did stand-up) was also there--he does a pretty good Sean Connery impression. The 45-minute show was too short, but very funny. I can't remmeber much, but I know they played New Choice (Change)and a story game about a boy in a bubble and his pet squirrel that got very strange (for those of you who were there, "Shake and Bake wino!")They also did a Harold about salt and pepper that led to Brad being a gluttonous Shakespearean king, Sean being a talking pig, and Ryan and Rick being "Rosencrantz and Connery" As always, it's great to hear Ryan do accents. :-) The next night, we went to see Houseful of Honkeys, the group Wayne has been a member of for years. This is the third time I've seen "You Bet Your Honkey!," their improvised gameshow, and they just blow me away every time! As one of us commented, there *is* no weak link in this group. I would love to see any of them on Whose Line, especially Clare Sera (more women on WL!!!!) and Jonathan Mangum. They played one of my favorite games, Da Doo Ron Ron, basically a rhyming, last-man standing game where they take turns singing lines of the song with the end ryhme suggested by the audience ("I met him on a Monday and he was a tree..."). Of course, the poor third person has to think of 3 rhymes--if you don't understand, go listen to the song. If someone messes up, the audience yells "die", that peson is out, they get a new word, and they go faster. The audience was cruel that night--they suggested pumpkin when Clare asked for a 2-syllable word. We let Wayne get away with some pretty if-fy ryhmes (somethin' and pumpkin?) but killed Clare for "munchkin" I also really like their warm-up rap game, which is totally unlike WL. They pair up and switch people in mid-verse so the other person has to come up with a rhyme very quickly. And I liked 3-way scene where they do a straight scene, then repeat it in 3 different styles--in this case, Western, Swedish, and erotica (hehe). Since that game consisted of 3 guys, one of whom was playing a belly-dancer, it got really interesting when they got to erotica. :-) If you go see Mystery Men, Joel McCrary (who sings very, very well, BTW) has a small part in it as a cop. And you can see Jonathan and Matt in various commercials. The Honkeys are getting some serious airtime lately. :-) After the Honkeys, there was an improv show called ACME Unplugged. Jonathan stayed around for it. Chris Vose, a friend of Brad's, was in it, as well as Dean Haglund, one of the Lone Gunmen from X-Files, who's from Winnipeg (or as Jonathan sang, Winnie-the-pig). There was also a women and another guy (really, really good) whose names I can't remember. I enjoyed the show immensely, even if it did get extrememly bizzre. Any show with a "professional pooper" and a guy that get killed when people shove 50 carrots down his throat is pretty strange. The things that come from an improvisor's brain..... Whew, almost done! Well, on Saturday and Sunday, we attended the tapings, which I will ramble on about in a different message. Monday night we went to see L.A. Theatresports do Shakespeare Unscripted. Brad used to perform with them a lot, though he hasn't done any of the Shakespeare shows. Mike McShane (and Ali Sweeney, for you DoOL fans) has been a guest performer, though. The show was about 90 minutes with a short intermission and about 10 performers (4 women and 6 men, I think), so this was a major production. :-)The audience-titled show that night was "The Sword of the Kilt-maker's daughter" and they had to incorporate never taking a bath into the show. The show was excellent--we laughed hysterically through the entire second half. It was truly impressive to watch them craft an entertaining plot that, uh, mostly made sense while speaking more-or-less in Shakepearean language. It was also a great deal of fun to watch them make fun of each other, subtly and not-so-subtly, when one of them screwed up ("Were thou a knight and not a fair lady, I wouldst have a good joke here" "What, are we being attacked by Norway?" "It's all over the news" "I just like slapping you" "It's a *sword*!" ). Well, if you made it all the way through this, I'm impressed. :-) I guess my point is that I had a great time and I highly recommend any of these groups. So, if you are ever in L.A. or they perform near you, go see them!!!! Whose Line tapings, Aug. 7, show 1(SPOILER ALERT) Wednesday, 11-Aug-1999 22:46:10 24.129.11.2 writes: Well, I still love watching a taping of Whose Line, but I hate the pick-ups more than ever. I don't have the time to describe all of this, but... The first Saturday show starred Wayne, Denny, Colin, and Ryan. My favorite new game you may have already heard about from the last group that went. It's called 3-headed Broadway Star. Three people sing a Broadway song one word at a time. I've normally heard of it played as a story game (like the Comedy Store Players' Dr. Richard Vranch game). At this taping, Ryan, Colin, and Wayne sang the love song "Fruity" from the musical Bananas Over Bowling. Even Colin did well at this game. They also did a Scene to Rap about brain surgery...very cute because Denny gave Wayne a labotomy in the first verse, so he sang nonsense until Ryan gave him his brain back. Yes, it's a little weird to have the guitar involved in the rap music. They did a Song Styles about a blender. Wayne sang in the style of the Temptations, while the others were the backup singers (but mostly dancers). Drew and Denny did Foreign Film Dub titled "Mel Gibson: The Movie," where we learned neither of them can do a German accent. :-)Colin, Denny, and Ryan played Newsflash and the clip was some old strange, western musical (or as Drew called it, "Western a go go"). Colin got close...kinda. In Weird Newscasters, we get to see Colin do his dinosaur and Wayne attempt to impersonate Jerry Lewis. They played World's Worst (person to live with), Let's Make a Date, Narrator, Greatest Hits (of the private eye...and Denny still doesn't get to sing), Questions Only, Sound Effects, and Film Dub. They also did hoedowns...over and over. *No* one was having luck with them, it was awful. Poor Colin...he kept having to start over and like a good little professional, he sang a different one every time. This one was the weakest taping of the 3 I saw, not that it was terrible or anything. It had some pretty good moments. I would say least best if that made any sense. ;-) The crowd was semi-dead and Denny was having an off night (poor thing, 'cause she's normally so good). Let's just put it this way: they can't get 2 shows out of this one. My opinion: they should use 3-headed Broadway Star, Sound Effects, the blender Song styles, PQ and/or LMAD, World's Worst, Weird Newscasters (have to see the dinosaur, though that game wasn't as good as some of the others), and Greatest Hits. Game least likely to make it past the censors: Questions Only--singles night at the supermarket. Well, I'm tired, so I'll post about the other 2 tapings tomorrow. At least I'm not the one who has to type out everything about the tapings. ;-) Anyways, my first (and only for a long time) LA trip went like as follows. And excuse my self-absorbtion, but I've been waiting too long to post something like this! =) Tuesday: Slept. Wednesday: Went with Ash and Nessa to see Brad at a place on the Santa Monica Pier that I can't remember the name of. It was long-form, which I hadn't been exposed to before and want to see more of now. Brad came over to our table (by his own free will, I might add!) beforehand to say hi to Ash and Ness, and Ash introduced him to me. I must say I was not prepared at all for how nice a guy he is. Colin has some stiff competition on the congeniality front. Spoke with Brad again afterwards, and still couldn't get over how wonderful he was. The show was excellent, featured some faces I'd seen on the tele before and other faces I'd see again in the coming evenings. Nice place, nice food, nice company! Thursday: Improv! We phoned for tickets in the afternoon and they were sold out, but Tash and Donna and I were advised (well-advised!) to show up anyway, as the performers have a habit of hanging around outside. Sure enough, we weren't out of the car 2 minutes when we spotted Brad. I went up and talked to him (well, *we* went up, ahem ahem). We also spotted Ryan, but I didn't want to bother him because he was talking with the other performers and smoking and looking too cool and tall for my pathetic self to even be looking at (i.e. "I was scared"). Brad, no problem. Ryan, scary. Anyway, Brad asked if we were coming to the show, we told him no, blah blah blah, and a few minutes later we sitting in the Improv. We left after the 45 minutes and headed back outside where Brad and Ryan both were. Ryan was farther down the street talking to people and being gawked at (guilty), and Brad was closer to us talking first to 2 pubescent boys who seemed to be lookin' to get into the business and then 2 young women who seemed to be lookin' to get into his pants. We thanked him profusely for sneaking us in, and I asked him if I could bother him for a photo. Gave my camera to Donna, posed, and Ryan walked past. I kinda whimpered and Donna said his name, which I think is what got Brad to wrangle Ryan into the shot. It's an awesome photo -- I'll scan it in asap. Is there anyone else, just out of curiosity, to have a pic with Ryan and not actually met him? Friday: The wild Martin Short Show chase. We knew that Wayne was going to be a guest at that day's taping of the show (coming this fall, check your local listings to find the affiliate in your area who got stuck with it in the package deal with Jerry Springer and Donny and Marie). Nobody knew where it was filming or where to get tickets, but when Donna and I were going down Hollywood Blvd. that afternoon a guy was giving out free tickets. The taping was supposed to be at 4:45. After a hellish time trying to GET to the studio, we stood in line forEVER, got let into the studio area (still outside mind you), and sat there for ages. Acme started around 8, and we didn't want to miss the Honkeys. At 6:15, we were still waiting to be let into the studio so we just said "f*ck it" and left. We didn't know if Wayne would be at the show or not, so I was all nervous waiting for the Honkeys to come out. And there was Wayne! Yay! And damn, they were amazing. All of them. I'd move to LA just to see them every week. =) And I agree with Donna, I'd love to see Clare on WL. I tend to be a little judgemental with women (enter psychobabble here...insecure/threatened/your choice), but I loved her! Did get to meet Wayne and get a pic afterwards, but he wasn't extremely talkative. Maybe because we were the last ones to get to him and he was talked out already. =) Saturday/Sunday: Tapings! I'll let Donna elaborate on those. =) Actually, I'm gonna leave it at that. My hands hurt. I'm tired. I want my mommy. BTW, for you older people or those who watch too much Nick at Night or TVLand. Ken Howard (the White Shadow) was in the audience. In fact, you'll probably be able to see him when Drew stands in the audience at the beginning. Anyway, you probably already heard that they played Bartender (I missed that game) with Brad as the Bartender. Ryan was in love with himself (some audience member obviously used to watch the British version) and Wayne was angry that his stereo was stolen. Ryan was the field reporter in Newsflash reporting on aligators in a swamp. They did 2 games of song styles: one about Dina the thermostat markerter in the style of a 50s teen song and the other about Ellie the nursing student in the style of the Blues brothers (great BB dancing). Whose Line was great. Ryan was Obi Wan training Luke Skywalfer (Colin). Colin gets the best line, but I'm not going to spoil that--you can just wait. :)Party Quirks has Colin reading Drew's secret diary and Weird Newscasters has Ryan fighting the urge to strip. Let's Make a Date has Brad as a frisky dog turning rabid. (Not that this will make any sense to you, but--"In that wig, you look just like Julia") They played World's worst person to live with ("wake up, it's time to do a hoedown"--Ryan). This was the last one we went to. It was on Sunday evening. The performers were Rayn, Colin, Wayne, and Chip Esten! Let me tell you, Chip sings better than ever and he has SO much energy. And he's matured nicely, too, ladies. ;-) I always thought he was a little too prettyboy for my tastes (much better now), but that has nothing to do with his improvising abilities, so let's move on, shall we? OK, so they played my new favorite game again--3-headed Broadway Star. Ryan, Colin, and Wayne dang the love song Timber! for the musical Lumberjacks in Love. I loved Colin's singing in this one. Chip and Wayne did Song Styles as Bruce Springsteen (you'll see what I mean by energy here) to Connie, who was on vacation from Canada. Colin came onstage and gave her a big hug. :) In LMAD, Wayne was the characters of South Park, Colin was a medeival torture victim, and Ryan was a vulture looking for a feast. Drew got in trouble (and then felt bad), because he let them do South Park in an earlier game of Film and Theater Styles. One of the production people tried to warn him that it was in another game but he thought the censors were saying not to use SP, so he used it anyway just to piss them off. The Greatest Hits with Wayne of Chip was Songs of the Dentist. In Weird Newscasters, the only ones I can remember right now are Chip who was in a Broadway show and Ryan trying to quell rumors that he was gay (which became a running gag). During another round of bad hoedowns about people you hate(everyone had a really difficult time all weekend, poor guys), they sang about car salesmen, which went so-so.They tried again with a different subject and Nessa and Ash got in the suggestion for a men hoedown! It took them four loud yells before Drew finally took it, but he gave in. This suggestion gave them more leeway, but they still struggled. Maybe it *is* time to get rid of hoedowns (say it isn't so)! They played a Telethon for losing gameshow contestants with Colin and Ryan naming Wayne and Chip as various celebrity singers. That's all I remembered to write down. Game least likely to get past the censors: 3-headed Broadway Star with Wayne, Drew, and Ryan singing "Milk Me" from Three Maids on the Moon. And that was it! Sorry for not being more thorough (hehehe).
