Blackfly collumn in my TV telecaster. (You didn't miss it??) Saturday, 28-Aug-1999 22:21:22 209.148.156.205 writes: Hey guys and dolls! Found this in the local TV guide. A Lot More Fun Than History Class Blackfly contains smart, witty historical references Hmmmmm..... A Canadian comedy about the 1700s-era fur trade?? Doesn't exactly jump off the page as a side splitter. But prepare to be pleasantly surprised - and entertained - by the distinctly homegrown comedy Blackfly, a TV pilot airing Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Global. Who knew jokes about Canoes ("the tippy boats") could be so funny?? But the fact that Blackfly is a laughing riot isn't really all that shocking, considering it is the brainchils of very funny comic Ron James, the creator, star, and writer of the 30 minute opener. James plays the epitomous Blackfly, a lowly military man whose career is going from bad to worse. "Ever have one of those days where you should have flipped your boss the bird and made a run for the hills instead?? Me too," he says in the introduction. We soon find out that Blackfly (so named because he's a "pernicious and annoying irritant in the side of the enemy")is in deep doo doo after botching a mission to steal some mint jelly from the French for his crazy leg-of-lamb loving British colonel. Angie here :) Colin had that beautiful line why Blackfly is Blackfly. Instead of taking the fall for the disaster, Col Boyle (played with great bluster by Richard Donat) orders Blackfly to venture into the Canadian Wilderness to capture a cunning trapper named Moosejaw who has been stealing furs from The Company. "You mean somebody is getting the shaft?" asks Blackfly. "Precisely," answers Boyle, "and it won't be me." Adding to Blackfly's misery are the couple of useless twits he's been saddled with for the journey - the foppish Entwhistle (Colin Mochrie) And he has the cutest British accent and white wig!! :) and the scaredy cat McTavish (Andrew Younghusband). Along the way, he stumbles upon wildly comic characters such as a boisterous gang of French-Canadian voyageurs led by - check this out - Lucien-Habitant-Pea-Soup-Regardez-Le-Roast-Beef-de-Poutinecourt (Peter Keleghan). This is all very funny stuff, more so because of the smart historical references from history nut James. (It helps to have a passing knowledge of Canadian history, but it is not essential.) He also cleverly worked in many topical references to issues such as Quebec seperation or the Somalia inquiry. Produced by Salter Street and filmed last month at historical sites, including Fortress Louisbourg and Habitation at Port Royal, the half hour pilot is polished, both in delivery and look, with a cast that also includes Joe Lynch, Geoff McLean, Gary Lavert and Susan Dalton as Blackfly's unfaithful girlfriend. Note from Angie: I know Susan, she was the choreographer for G and S for a year! Reminiscent of the classic British period comedy Blackadder, Blackfly is full of irreverent, mile a minute wisecracks. It is also a lot more fun than Grade 6 history class. (Story by Pat Lee, Tuned In) So, that is all folks......very good review, and I can't wait to see the next ep. Colin was so cute in his white wig and brit accent!! :) I will post the pic as soon as I get it scanned.
