For more juicy details consult Sam or Jenn Well, the time has come to fill you all in on the excitement that is Montreal!! If you haven't heard yet, Samantha and I ( JennD) ventured forth to that great city last weekend! Of course our main purpose was to see the finals of the World Improv Championships ( which I find a strange title, since only Canadian teams were involved??), but much more fun was to be had!!!!! :) :) :) Our trip began on Friday July 23, 1999 as I picked Sam up at the train station in Beautiful sunny Belleville, Ontario. We hopped into my lovely car, and speed cast aside we made our way east towards Montreal. We stopped for about an hour in Kingston Ontario for dinner ( making sure to wave to local whosers who were there only in spirit, cause we had no idea as to where they lived!) Well, we climbed back into my little green car, popped Greg's stand up tape in the tape deck and made our way a little closer to Montreal. We didn't plan to actually get all the way to the city the first night, since we didn't have accommodation, and the improv show was so early in the afternoon - I knew that we wouldn't make it in time :) So, we pulled off in Cornwall, Ontario..en route to Montreal - yet still in my nice little province :) We found a nice cheap place, which turned out to be awesome - for what we paid for it !!! A nice little family owned place..with free toothbrushes, soaps, and such. Yahoo!! Free stuff!! We climbed into our rooms...took possession of which bed we wanted, watched some South Park and had a grand old time. We wanted to watch the Ontario/East match which the Comedy Network so nicely replayed at midnight. Basically, in my opinion - Ontario should have won. The East got the one liners at the last few minutes, which unfortunately seemed to be what the audience remembered, so they got their votes! Ack! Well, the clock struck three and we will still up talking!! We were hoping to get up nice and early and make our way on the road - which tired as we were - we did successfully!! We were only 1 hr from Montreal, so Sam got out her map and we found what we were looking for!! Our nice 4 star hotel - which Sam so nicely found us!! Yay Sam!! Compared to Toronto Prices - it was such a bargain!! WOOHOO!! We parked underground, but couldn't check in until 3, so decided to do some sightseeing. We walked to Rue St.; Denis, which was the street that the Festival took place on mostly, and walked up and down the empty street, looking at what was to be a great big party!! Sam found us 'Le Medley' which was the theater which housed the Improv Games, and then we kept on-a-walking! It wasn't long and we found the Museum of Contemporary Art! That took up a couple of hours of our afternoon, and Sam and I got to experience a beautiful art gallery! Did you know that in most art galleries, they don't want you to place one finger on the wall!! What's up with that? *LOL* Well I did learn one thing. Sam is quite the artistic soul!! She took a normal metal looking structure and contorted it to a beautiful looking object! I applauded in the middle of the entire art gallery!! Well, as we walked through the gallery, using our Whoser minds..we added a little flair to a quite dull sort of place! One structure was a room filled with red light...strange drawings on the wall and a faceless stuffed figure watching something bland on a television. We came to the conclusion is Whose Line was on that TV - the man would be dancing and laughing around the room!! We walked a little further and saw a beautiful photograph of some people dressed in angel costumes - huge wings!! It reminded me of someone - but I couldn't remember who :) :) Last but not least...a room with LARGE pictures on the wall - basically you had to stand at a reasonable distance to get the full picture in view! One was multiple photographs of a mans back! Not sure who the man was...but we had some discussion at who it might have been! :) teehee. Suddenly - the most attractive man walked by. I swooned! - to coin Ashley's phrase! He was beautiful! Enough said! We made our way out of the art gallery and outside to a HUGE rain storm! I love the rain and as people ran by us with umbrellas, we just took our time and enjoyed the moment!! It wasn't long and we were back at the hotel! Now, we still had an hour to check in, so we toured the hotel shopping area and came across a wonderful little bar and pool table! ( not to mention a few skids that resided near by!) We threw in our $$ and played a game as some old dirty men watched! If we wanted some companions...we could have had them :) But, we were too interested in improv at the moment :) teehee So, we check in to our awesome room. No rusty bathtub! Free shoe shine kit, shower cap !! WOOHOO and another free toothbrush! I was in heaven!! We dried off, watched the rain calm down and got ready to make our way back to Le Medley! At this point it was 4p.m.!! The line up was rather long for 1 1/2 before the beginning of the show..but we then heard that the seats were on a first come first serve basis! Then we understood.! Due to my height...in an instant we saw SEAN CULLEN!! WOOHOO!! He had come outside to tape his little introduction and we strained to see his cute little face! Sam got the biggest urge to eat some cheese! Cheese good! He had the front of the line whooping it up, but much to our dismay, we couldn't hear a thing. Well, I had pre-reserved my tickets, so I got to make my way to the front door to then stand in another line to pick up my tickets. ( which meant I got to walk by Sean! )! Inside at the ticket office, as I stood there ever so quietly ( as if!), the interior door opens and out walks the blond haired guy from the X-files !! One of the Lone Gunman! WOOHOO!! As I watch the show...I got a bit excited, but he re-entered the theater before I could say hello!! Oh well!! Well, they let us in...finally!! I was hoping to get reasonable seats...but it turned out that everyone ahead of us were alcoholics and decided to sit at the bar! They handed us our voting cards and our nice little rubber shoe *teehee* and we made our way to rink side :) For those of you who didn't get a chance to watch the televised version of the show..this is the premise...... In the middle of the theater is a hockey rink, albeit very miniature! The boards are only about 2 1/2 feet high and the It would fit about 5 people across ( shoulder to shoulder) and was only about maybe 10 feet across. This was the playing field. They had referees - even dressed in the style of hockey referees who fittingly had kazoos and could foul a team for such things as confusion, blocking and such improv faux pas... One team sat on one side of the rink...and fittingly the other team on the opposite side. There were 2, 30 minute periods, and the televised version lasted about 1 1/2 hours!! Sometimes they had mixed improv involving members from both teams, and sometimes it was comparative improv where the teams would be given a subject, and an amount of time and we watched intently to see what they would come up with! Well, as we entered, the first row on the opposite side was EMPTY!! Sam, made a mad dash and the rest is history! FRONT ROW SEATS!! WOOHOO!! There was a waitress who made her way through our section taking orders for food and alcohol. Since we had only each had one beverage containing alcohol at the pool bar..we decided that we would go forth and order some more! Well, since it took 1/2 hour to get her attention the show was 5 minutes to air before we even ordered! That is why you see Sam drinking her very very strong beverage on television !! As the audience was entering..we saw Jane Luk ( you may know her from IH&H). We called her over - as politely as we could and told her that we thought Ontario should have won, and then chatted for awhile. She was obviously looking for someone and we thought..WOO the Devils should still be around! Since Ontario lost out, we weren't sure if they stuck around or not! Well, I believe it was SAM who spotted them first in the balcony! ! So as the show progressed, we occasionally peered into the balcony area to see reactions from the celebrities :) There were many highlights of the show itself!! You didn't miss a whole lot during commercial breaks - for those who watched on television. The West did a scene though which began with a husband and wife going for a hunting trip...next thing you know he is trying on a new 'outfit' she got him ( which just so happens to have antlers), and she has the rifle! Next thing you know she is chasing him around the rink (a.k.a forest) and telling him to make sandwiches and such things! It was very very funny! Kinda like the woman taking control! You gotta like that!! teehee And, to bring this onto a Whose Line is it Anyway topic... Colin had pre-taped " Inside the Game - with Colin Mochrie" which was taped before he left for L.A. to tape the new season of Whose Line. Now, we couldn't hear Sean's commentary nor could we hear Colin's bit...but we could SEE Colin's bit on the screen on the opposite side of the theater! There is Sam and I, the only 2 watching the screen and giggling at his antics! I can't explain what he was doing..( but if you get a chance to watch a tape of the show..you will see) Turns out he was describing hand signals that the refs use! I was enjoying myself!! Well, I should also mention that the 'rubber shoes' mentioned earlier where to throw at the ref, if they made a call which was uncalled for! So basically that happened a few times! And who got smacked in the head! ME!! Yes ME!! Oh the pain! *lol* But we threw as well! I accidentally hit on of the members of the East team...and being the Canadian that I am, quickly apologized!! But Sam, personally delighted in the opportunity to toss footwear!! Well, the show was coming to a close.(..and if you haven't watched it yet - I won't let you in on who is the 1999 World Champions..), and they invited the Ontario and Quebec teams down to the rink to celebrate! Which basically meant that Albert Howell was there, and Andrew quickly followed with his trusty digital camera! ( he had also made his way down during the taping to catch a few pictures during the show!! ). We stayed back while the audience left, hoping to get the nerve to go up and say hello! Well, I got my chance...basically Andrew Currie exited the rink and I was right behind him. Did I say hello? NO, I just followed and became one giant chicken! And I call myself a Whoser!! So, we left the theater, leaving the stars of the evening back to gather their things...and we make our way into the streets to enjoy in the party that was an ongoing thing outside :) The crowds were huge! Shoulder to shoulder! It was nuts! First thing we notice..a PARADE!! And not just any kind of parade my friend...this parade was a parade of twins. Identical twins everywhere! We weren't intoxicated and seeing double either! It was pretty fun. There were some guys with drums, some blue people on a carousal! (I think we got pictures!!). And the last thing we noticed...a nice little drag clown! It was a guy - dressed in feminine clothing and having a blast! Its hard not to have fun, when everyone around you is enjoying themselves!! Next we made our way up and down the street. There were several street acts occuring..but much to our dismay - they were completely in French! Now, not that I have anything against the french, but I couldn't understand a darn word, so we headed forward. Now in the windows of shops along Rue St. Denis were comic window performances! One being a sort of demonstration with a candle ( oh it was in a condom shop - and I wont tell you were the candle went!) Another had a man eating a sausage. Sounds normal, until I tell you he was without his clothes - but don't worry we didn't see anything! There is more - but this is a public board people :) There was also a little cafe which had a black sheet covering the window and faces stuck through holes. You couldn't hear what was going on, but the facial expressions were priceless! Well, the night was getting kinda late and we were dying for something sweet! So, we headed to a 'Second Cup' - which is a coffee shop! Inside Sam got some cookies and I splurged on the Chocolate/Vanilla/Banana Cake! Hmmm :) !! We found seat and watched some english speaking television as we munched! There was a large blue furry guy, hanging around this guy who was throwing out t-shirts! Well, Sam got up and went over to the very cute guy and asked how to obtain such a nice free t-shirt! Well, turns out it was a contest and there were no more free t-shirts for the night! Much sadness ensued! So, we continued munching when the nice Second Cup guy comes and gives Sam a FREE T-SHIRT ( she had to do a trick first though!)!! See what happens when you ask nicely!! Well, next thing you now, the blue furry guy comes over and starts kissing my hand and Sam gets her camera ready, so he poses! Then he wants to kiss Sam's hand, so he points to the camera, then to me ( basically telling Sam to give me the camera to get a picture with him too!). So we do, he kisses her hand and is on his way! Hmm. I like Montreal! :) If only he was a real guy! :) Well, we head back to our very nice hotel...and fall asleep quite quickly! It was a long day! Filled with excitement! Basically Sunday was our travelling home day! We got up early, went for breakfast..made our way back to the highway! ( and it only took us 2 attempts!!). My silly mind got us going way too early....So we headed here to PICTON and I showed Sam my little computer here! :) and then we headed back to the Belleville train station through a nice rain storm, or as Sam puts it.." It was more than just a storm...it was like the pits of hell opening up"!!! And we waved goodbye as the train headed west on its way to Toronto!! So that is it my friends...that was our weekend! It was fun while it lasted...and oh the memories! One more thing. Andrew Currie ( a.k.a Devil Andrew) has some of his nice digital pictures up on his site, and with his permission..here is the site address : http://www3.sympatico.ca/andrew.currie/things.html So, go check out his pictures! They are quite fun!! :) Hope you enjoyed our little trip!!:~::~::~::~::~::~: Samantha and JenniferD. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Samantha and JenniferD.: What happens when 2 Whosers make their way to Montreal (27-Jul-1999 22:47:42) Katrina (Who is just silly tonight!): WOO HOO!!
