Ok the ratings were not great over later years (but what do you expect for a 10:30pm -11pm time slot), but at least the audience stuck by it whilst it lasted. Anyway it was bound to happen eventually. WLiiA wouldn't be able to last for ever and ever. I think the dissapointment may lie in the crunch that just as a fan base had just got established, they chose to to pull the plug. Plus Channel 4 is an independant network, unlike ABC (who have Disney to supply the money for big name shows), and therefore can only stretch their money so far for making popular shows. Anyway I'm not giving up all hope. Maybe Hat-Trick (being as good as they are with shows), may bounce back with something newer and fresher which could include, Steve, Rory, Joise, Greg et al. I'm just glad I have the chance to see the show live. Plus for us Brits sake, theres always the good old Comedy Store. [Image] [Image] Whose Board is it, Anyway? So why? Wednesday, 23-Jun-1999 14:40:56 195.92.194.17 writes: Without trying to be biased as a confirmed Whoser, I am disappointed but also genuinely surprised at Hat-Trick's decision to axe WLiiA? Certainly in the UK, the show has remained consistently popular throughout its ten years on Channel 4. It has made stars out of Clive Anderson, Paul Merton, John Sessions, Josie Lawrence and Tony Slattery - all of whom felt enough affection for the show to continue doing it long after they had graduated to bigger things - and gained enough respect from seasoned comedy performers like Rory Bremner, Stephen Fry, Steve Frost and Eddie Izzard for them to agree to appearances. There are regular repeats of more recent series, and the show acted as the godfather of improvisation, earning it respect as a viable comedy format amongst those within the mirth business, when before it had been frowned upon as unskilled and lazy. and the show has won several awards. To my knowledge, the ratings have never dipped, even when the show was filmed in the States (NOT a dig, just a fact that some American humour is difficult for Brits to understand) and the stars of the show always seem happy and keen to do more. Hat-Trick's reputation as a terrific production company brimming with ideas was establihsed by WLiiA? Since then, only HIGNFY and Father Ted have made similar impacts, yet out of these three flagship shows the only one they are contiuing with is HIGNFY, which they were even prepared to do when Paul Merton, the show's biggest triumph, announced he would be unavailable for one series. Clearly Father Ted had to end for sad reasons beyond Hat-Trick's control, but it appears to me that the company has really shot itself in the foot for allowing one of its other truly successful projects to die an unnecessary death when there is clearly demand for it to be revived all over again. And with the cast of Drop The Dead Donkey also quitting, you would have thought they would have wanted to cling on to WLiiA? for dear life, as one of only two remaining Hat-Trick shows which are guaranteed a hefty core audience. But what else? Hat-Trick have had some turkeys which they insist on pursuing - The Peter Principle was a God-awful sitcom, Whatever You Want far too icky and mainstream and Game On too unpopular to be a success and too popular to be a cult show. Add to that failed projects like The Brain Drain and The Best Show In the World...Probably, and the decision to axe WLiiA? in the country which made it looks ever more bizarre. But when money is the issue, commercial companies always think about the books rather than the quality. They go for the highest bidder and if that means ruining a perfectly constructed British show in favour of concentrating on big American bucks, complete with the brashness, insensitivity and unjustified censorship of American remakes, then so be it, obviously. I'd be fascinated to know exactly what Jimmy Mulville and Denise O'Donghue have to say about this issue, but I doubt we ever will. RIP WLiiA? British style - but we'll make sure you live on in our hearts, if not on our screens. The show is one of the few things, alongside Tim Henman and E-Type Jaguars, which make me proud to be British. I was afraid they would totally glitz it up or water it down. I'm glad to say that they don't seem to be glitzing it up -- the production seems to be very similar between the US version and series 10 of the UK version (same set helps there, though I do miss the UK theme song). Censorship is another issue, though. Canada is more similar to the UK than the US is when it comes to what we will allow on air. The Comedy Network, for example, airs WLiiA at 8am and 2pm daily, totally unedited, with all swearing and innuendo intact. I think Canadians and Americans alike here get a little irritated with the strictness of ABC's censors (the 'hand' incident comes to mind). So in some ways, it can be said that the US version *is* watered down. So while the death of the UK version is sad, and while many of us admit that the UK version was superior, the US version is still very funny, and is one of the rare success stories in UK television programs being adapted for the US. Is Niroshi medicocre? Is Ryan being a newborn foal mediocre? Not in my book. Maybe I have different tastes in comedy than some, but I still find DL hilarious and so do many Americans who helped the show get great ratings. There have been lots of excellent games in DL. And if it lasts for 10 years, we may have as many favorites as we do in WL. I slightly prefer the newer British version (last 5 years or so) over DL and the older British version(Matt, it is just as difficult for an American to get some of the British humor as it is for a Brit to get some of the American humor). OK, the censorship annoys me, too, but I can deal with it. There's still plenty of innuendo if you pay attetion. Sometimes I think it's funnier when it's not so explicit. And I'll admit that sometimes I miss the freeness of the Brtish version. In fact, if you get right down to it, the British version is edited, too. Live improv shows really are the best. The current situation is much, much better than the show not being on at all. I hate to tell y'all this, but WLiiA? (or DLiiA? for that matter)can't last forever. Shows like Just a Minute that air for 30 years are certainly the exception. Who are we to say that Hat Trick might not have ended WL now or after the next series because they were tired of doing it? Then we would have nothing. At least this way, the show goes on. And if you find the new version so mediocre, don't watch it--pull out tapes of the 150 or so British episodes (I'm sure someone knows how many there really are). I've got most of 'em if you want 'em. Let's face it. The old British contestants have plenty of things to do besides WL--they've moved on. A new series wouldn't include them anyway, except maybe a guest appearance or two. Sure it would be nice to see some new British talent, just like I'm looking forward to seeing some new North American talent. Maybe some smart TV executive in Britain will come up with some new improv show. However, lurking around the improv ng, I've found that improv as an art form is doing much better on our continent than in England (with some exceptions like the Comedy Store Players). P.S. It's nice to know that American networks aren't the only ones stupid enough to kill good shows and put on bad new ones. Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking (against Friends?!?). Looks like we'll have to worry about DL, too. Merely my $0.02 (what is that in Canadian?).... A point about humour Thursday, 24-Jun-1999 12:39:14 195.92.194.103 writes: Donna, I take your point about cross-Atlantic humour being different, but remember that the last few UK series of WLiiA? have been dominated by Ryan, Colin and Greg, with only Steve Frost regularly flying the Union Jack. How many British contestants are going to be asked to appear on DLiiA? None whatsoever. And even if they were, I doubt many would go. Even when the UK version went to New York a few years ago, we only ever saw Josie Lawrence, John Sessions and Sandi Toksvig from this side of the pond make the trip. The last time I can recall an exclusively British edition of the show was in the days when Tony Slattery, Jim Sweeney and Steve Steen were all keen to appear - and that is many moons ago now. Now the whole show is to be done in America, presented by an American, and starring Americans only. I do not look forward to this at all. I find Ryan and Colin as funny as any of the British contestants, if not funnier, and Brad will always raise a smile, but from what I have already seen, the other, newer American recruits can't compare to some of the Brits. The Brits don't like the Americans because we stole your show. Colin and Ryan are great, and they aren't bad people what I've heard. I know I might be overacting, but when it comes to my country I need to defend the Anti-American feelings that are going around since the story came out. I might be totally wrong by feeling this way, and Matt you're a really nice person I just didn't like what you said in the post you made. Why is it that we here in North America can appreciate both American and Brit tastes, but the Brits tend to turn their nose up at American comedy? We all admit that the UK version is superior (due to the latitude that they are given with censors, etc) but to have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the new series because it is American and features American contestants comes off as being, well... a little stand offish. Yes, there are dumb American sitcoms (and there are dumb British sitcoms too). We would love to see Brit contestants on the US version (though I've heard Josie quoted as saying that the trip is 'too long', even though Colin and Ryan and others had no problem making the trip for a few seasons). Anyway, there's not necessarily any reason for panicking quite just yet. In TV terms, "for the forseeable future" can mean "It's not on next month's schedule" and "Never" can mean "Not until people start complaining". In other words, this message could still mean that, as yet, Hat Trick still needs the go ahead from Channel 4, or whoever, before they can start planning another series for sure. We already know that the contestants know absolutely nothing until very shortly before filming begins. Still, whether or not another series is planned, it may be worth sending off a few e-mails towards Hat Trick (as the makers) and Channel Four (as the initial buyers), and perhaps other countries' WL-screening channels, just to make sure they know the support it has. Feedback counts for a lot in terms of channel's opinions of a show, and Hat Trick would be unlikely to turn down doing another series so long as someone was going to pay them for it. (it may also be worth stressing the importance of British stars on the show, and how the American version can't and isn't going to replace this). It'a fickle industry and things change constantly. The fate of WL may not be decided for some time. "for the forseeable future" is probably the standard answer they give till they can make a firm decision. With the new series of DL coming up and the other ventures they produce Hat Trick are probably busy as it is. As for Channel 4, I think the real story here is that Channel 4's coup in taking the cricket away from the BBC means that they are no longer able to fund their research and creation of extremely tall & talented improvisors to perform on WL. Never fear, however, there are those amongst the Whosers who intend to protect these marvellous creatures. Planning for this endeavour has been underway for well over a year now. Once we have some other details sorted out the executive board shall advertise for positions in the captive breeding programme, and other handling, twiglet cultivation and administrative employment opportunities. It will be a wonderful place, where you can see the performers in their natural habitats. We can announce that we do have plans for an enviromentally friendly theme park adjacent to the complex. The synchronized humping-the-Tony should not be missed. Someone who needs a Bex and a good lie down....
