So if you could combine who you wished to combine....? Sunday, 03-Oct-1999 05:00:43 195.92.194.72 writes: We've had two very constructive debates lately about the lack of rotating of contestants on the programme. As I and Mark have both said previously, this is down to a need for consistency in the programmes which will keep the audience figures nicely bumped up to render the show a success and a continued going concern, something which didn't apply in the British days. However, we all dream of an ideal world don't we? And if the seasoned Whosers among us look back at the ten years of programmes since the early Sessions days through to the current Stiles/Mochrie dominated episodes, there have been a hell of a lot of contestants. Some have had regular stints, some have been just cameos; some were successful, some not so successful; some made just one fleeting appearance and yet had more impact than others who may have had elongated runs. But most of them leave us with at least one abiding memory and even those whose appearances may not have been so thought-provoking managed to deliver something to make us laugh and think, "maybe this person could hack it." So let's close our eyes and dream of this ideal world. Contestants who have never appeared together before suddenly get their opportunity to do so. All the names are put into a metaphorical hat and four at a time are drawn out. Who do you think would combine particularly well? Maybe two contrasting personalities who can bounce off one another or conversely, two seemingly identical sorts who can supply the laughs and the skill by trying to constantly outwit each other. These are mine: Paul Merton and Colin Mochrie. I would love to see Colin's variety of rubbery facial contortions which forever stitch us up put alongside Paul's wonderful monotone and minimalistic approach. I firmly believe that those two, in a game like F&T Styles, would be an absolute diamond of a combination. Mike McShane and Steve Frost. Mike's outrageously imaginative dialogues which no-one in the show's history can ever outdo, combined with Steve's equally unoutrageous but still heavily delivered laughter-based lines. Would Mike's occasionally brilliant tendency to go over the top crack Steve up like Ryan does? Or would Steve feel more at home with someone who he would make him feel more involved? As I haven't seen DLiiA?, this may have already happened, but I would love to see those two seasoned songsmiths Chip Esten and Wayne Brady working together on a duet. In fact, put all the great tunecrafters together - Chip, Wayne, Mike, Brad, Niall - maybe even *sigh* Josie - who would come out on top? Would anyone come out on top at all or would they, as I suspect would happen, there would be the sort of classic moment where all the improvisers have each other in stitches as much as the audience? In terms of ability to make up songs out of those lot I daren't split them in order of favourites - I think all of them have great skill. Chip and Wayne have the best actual singing voices, however, and maybe a combination of those two would have us crying with both laughter and sheer emotion. And what other combinations of past and present stars would make you sit up and take notice even more than you already do? Jim Sweeney and Ryan Stiles? Tony Slattery and Stephen Fry? Greg Proops and Steve Steen? The choice is yours! Wayne looks back at Chip to see if he's going to come out of the background and do a verse. Individually, of course, they're great singers. Chip did a very good Hoedown. Just the Chip/Wayne chemistry didn't work out. Though that recording will be remembered more for the bits that went wrong (shown later in a compilation) than, I suspect, the stuff which made it into what Clive would call "the regular programme". After all, who could forget Josie's true incompetence at the alphabet? It was tragically funny, and ironic that probably the only time Josie has made me laugh out loud on the show came when she was being humiliated by her own inept display and Sandi's brilliant, exasperated put-downs. Mike also sang a great soul song about a stapler, but that's for another thread in the future... :) Matt ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Matt: So if you could combine who you wished to combine....?
