Wayne Brady's week on "Hollywood Squares" Friday, 15-Oct-1999 19:13:42 141.209.159.207 writes: Here are the board layouts, questions, and answers for this week's "Hollywood Squares" with Wayne Brady. I'll comment afterward, but in my comments I'm going to disclose a fact that I think people know, but always seems to catch them by surprise when I mention it. This fact may decrease the enjoyment you derive from the show, so if you don't want to know, don't read past the asterisks. On with the show... Monday, October 11, 1999 | | Robert | Shawnee | Will Wuhl | Smith | Sasso | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Bruce | Whoopi | Danny Vilanch | Goldberg | Glover | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Wayne | Dedee | Andrea Brady | Pfeiffer | Thompson | | Round one |O|O -+-+- X|O| -+-+- |X| (X takes Wayne for the block) Tom: A snowshoe hare, a coyote, and an American black bear have been chosen to be something in the year 2002. What will they be? Wayne: The brand new Rainbow Coalition. No, actually, I think, uh... the black bear. The new representatives for the Sierra Club. (X agrees, but the answer is actually the mascots of the 2002 Olympic games. O goes to Robert Wuhl and wins.) Round two X| | -+-+- X|O|X -+-+- | | (O takes Wayne for the block) Tom: Revered in Japanese art, literature, and legend, the last time it erupted was in 1707. What is it? Wayne: (mouthing silently, like all badly-dubbed Japanese films) That would have to be... No, actually, Mt. Tokyo. (O disagrees. The correct answer is Mt. Fuji. I don't think there even is a Mt. Tokyo. In round three, time ran out right before Wayne would have been picked for the win.) Tuesday, October 12, 1999 | | Shawnee | Andrea | Robert Smith | Thompson | Wuhl | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Bruce | Whoopi | Wayne Vilanch | Goldberg | Brady | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Dedee | Danny | Will Pfeiffer | Glover | Sasso | | Round three (I don't have the question on tape, but Whoopi mentions Wayne in her answer, specifically, that he said "Hello, ma'am" when he met her. The answer was "Ma'am," for whatever reason.) X| | -+-+- |O| -+-+- | | (O takes Wayne. Wayne says, "Thank you, ma'am.") Tom: In Aesop's fable, what does the wolf do to get close to the sheep? Wayne: Cook 'em some greens and chicken. Come here, sheepy sheep. No, actually, seriously... Whoopi: I want to hear this. Wayne: Seriously, I believe that he sang to the sheep. (O disagrees. The correct answer was the wolf dressed in sheep's clothing.) Wednesday, October 13, 1999 | | Wayne | Deede | Andrea Brady | Pfeiffer | Thompson | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Bruce | Whoopi | Robert Vilanch | Goldberg | Wuhl | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Danny | Will | Shawnee Glover | Sasso | Smith | | Round one (In an earlier part of this episode, Danny Glover was picked and Tom asked him to explain the charity he was giving his paycheck to. Danny went into a rather long explanation.) |O| -+-+- |X| -+-+- O| | (O takes Wayne) Tom: Vigdís Finnbogadóttir... Wayne: What'd you call me? Tom: No, I wasn't calling you... just relax, now. This is a person, another person. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir... Whoopi: You know what he's saying. Tom: ...was Iceland's first woman to do what? Wayne: To change her name to Propecia Brown. And now she's part of Danny's organization. You know what I'm saying, girl. No, but really though. I'm making an intelligent guess. The first to climb Mt. Everest. (O disagrees. The correct answer is she was the first female to win a presidential election.) Round two | | -+-+- O|O|X -+-+- | | (O takes Wayne) Tom: In a survey of boys between the ages of 14 and 18, what was their number one career choice? Wayne: I'll say fireman. That's what I wanted to be when I was a kid, so I'll say fireman. (O disagrees. The correct answer is engineer (11%).) Round three | | -+-+- O|X|X -+-+- O| | (X takes Wayne for the block) Tom: The superstitious thought this August event would bring disaster from the sky or mad dogs on the loose, or something. It was the last what of the millennium? Wayne: The last time you'd see a black person on "Friends." Tom: Waiting for the first. Whoopi: Yeah, hello. They live in a neighborhood where nobody else apparently lives, honey. Wayne: Blue moon. The last blue moon. (X disagrees. The correct answer is the last eclipse. (On a personal note, I have to mention that the aformetioned eclipse completely ruined my visit to Stonehenge when I was in England this summer.)) Thursday, October 14, 1999 | | Andrea | Wayne | Robert Thompson | Brady | Wuhl | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Bruce | Whoopi | Deede Vilanch | Goldberg | Pfeiffer | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Danny | Shawnee | Will Glover | Smith | Sasso | | Round two | |O -+-+- |O| -+-+- X| | (O takes Wayne) Tom: When he shows up, you know the Macy's Day Parade is over, but the holiday season has just begun. Who? Wayne: Rahim the Kwanzaa pimp. You mean that's not it? Whoopi: I went to school with him. Wayne: No, when he shows up... I would say Father Time. (O disagrees. The correct answer is Santa Claus.) Friday, October 15, 1999 | | Deede | Will | Wayne Pfeiffer | Sasso | Brady | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Bruce | Whoopi | Shawnee Vilanch | Goldberg | Smith | | ----------+----------+---------- | | Robert | Andrea | Danny Wuhl | Thompson | Glover | | Round one | | -+-+- O|O|X -+-+- | |X (O takes Wayne for the block) Tom: If you're witnessing a chef make Cajun food and yell "Bam!" every few minutes, who are you looking at? Wayne: My Uncle Willie. Bam! What? Oh. Actually, I would say, I hope I get his last name right, Paul Prudhomme. (O agrees. The correct answer is Emeril Lagasse.) (X takes Wayne for the win) Tom: When Peter Hand brought him home from a carnival -- talk to the Hand -- in 1956, no one guessed that 43 years later, Tish would be the oldest known what? Wayne: Michael Jackson impersonator. Um, I, wow. I... circus performer. (X agrees after asking what "cicus performer" includes. The correct answer is goldfish.) Round two | | -+-+- |O| -+-+- O| | (O takes Wayne for the win) Tom: A Consumer Report safety advisory found that while being heated in a microwave, food should never touch what? Wayne: Your naked body. Um, actually, I know that one. Any metal. (O agrees. The correct answer is plastic wrap.) Round three O| | -+-+- O|X| -+-+- X| |X (O takes Wayne for the block) Tom: Tom Cruise did his own trick shots in what 1986 film? Wayne: "Top Gun." (O disagrees. The correct answer is "The Color of Money.") (X wins the game and chooses Whoopi Goldberg. Had he chosen Wayne, he would have played for a car.) ********** Number of questions Wayne was asked during the week: 11 (a little above average) Number of questions Wayne gave a joke answer to: 9 Number of questions Wayne gave the correct answer to: 0 Okay, now for the fact that you may not have known: the celebrities are given the questions and answers before the show, as well as possible bluff answers and jokes. So, sorry to disappoint you, but at least some of those jokes were pre-written for Wayne to say (I think he came up with the "Friends" joke on his own, because he's bad-mouthed it on the MB). So Wayne could have known the correct answers to some of those questions. This eliminates the pondering of why he didn't know any of the answers, but does raise the interesting question of why he chose to bluff on all 11 questions. Other fun facts... Height of a square: four feet Number of days Wayne was on the bottom: 1 Number of days Wayne was on the middle: 1 Number of days Wayne was on the top: 3 Number of days Wayne was in a non-corner square: 2 Number of days Wayne was in a corner square: 3 (the corners are generally chosen more) Number of times head writer Bruce Vilanch was on the show but not in the middle-left square: 2 Other DLiiA? performers on "Hollywood Squares:" Kathy Kinney All right, that's enough. That's Wayne's week on "Squares!"
