Who am I?

My name is Michael Block and I am a Psychiatrist. I live and work in Melbourne Australia. I graduated from Medical school at Monash University in 1980. I finished my specialist psychiatry training in 1997 at the Peninsula health Network, following which I established a Mother-Baby Unit in conjunction with the amazing midwifery staff at Rosebud Hospital. I have had an interest in perinatal psychiatry for about 9 years now - this interest developed during my psychiatric training.

I now work as a psychiatrist for 3 1/2 days a week in private practice, and also work on the Parent Infant Unit at Albert Road Clinic (ARC), a private psychiatric hospital located in Albert Road South Melbourne, an inner beachside suburb of Melbourne. This has an 8 bed (8 parent + 8 infants) inpatient unit that uses a psychodynamic, family centered milieu treatment approach. The focus of treatment is the mother and infant dyad. I am also involved in the ARC day programme, a 4 day per week post discharge (and alternative to inpatient treatment) programme. I also am a consultant psychiatrist to the Mother & Baby Unit at Masada Hospital, a private hospital with a small 4 bed mother & baby unit.

My private practice is located in Wattletree Road, Armadale. I work almost exclusively with mothers, infants and couples in the perinatal period, using a combination of psychodynamically informed psychotherapy, mother-infant play therapy, couple therapy, and group psychotherapy. I am currently doing additional training in group psychotherapy through the Australian Association of Group Psychotherapy.
