How Friedriechs Ataxia has affected me… I was born 100% normal as any normal child; I went to school totally normal. At the age of 11yo other kids noticed me running funny and I remember I started holding on to the handrail more going up and down stairs. My parents were not concerned at first, and then as it slowly progressed a bit they took me to see my doctor. He had no idea so he referred me to a specialist who also had no idea. I had a basic brain scan, I was diagnosed me with a brain tumour. I was referred to have a more advanced brain scan – the specialists made a mistake, a few months later they diagnosed me with Friedriechs Ataxia. What’s that? I bet you’re thinking! Friedriechs Ataxia can be explained in two ways, from my knowledge or in medical terms. I am going to explain from my knowledge as the medical terms are too hard to understand! Friedriechs Ataxia affects nerves and co-ordination, it is a progressive disability – it doesn’t progress fast or slow, Friedriechs Ataxia can lay dormant for years or it can progress fast. It does not cause early death like some disabilities do. It affects my speech (slightly), I have curvature of the spine – also affects my heart tissue (no major heart problems). It is very frustrating trying to get a job, even going out can be frustrating. Because Friedriechs Ataxia affects my co-ordination and speech – most people think Friedriechs Ataxia is a intellectual disability or I’ve been accused of being drunk, off my face etc. it’s 100% physical. One more thing which annoys me is people who feel sorry for me, why? I am normal – just my body won’t fully function!
