We will now look at the meaning of using patterns. We will use the same pattern as we used
when looking at the zero index, but we will go a little further.

We have seen that the pattern in this table is to decrease
the index by one in the first column, and to divide by
2 in the second and third columns. Using either definition
we end up with 1 as the answer for . After that the pattern would continue the same for both
definitions.
This gives us the same answer as we obtained by looking at the
definitions. This is nice to know and suggests
we are onto a good thing.
