Meeting Agenda immediately following AGM Fourth Term 2007 Notice of General Meeting Time: 7.45
pm. Light refreshments from 7.15pm. Date: Monday,
29th October, 2007 Venue: St
Ives North Public School 87
Memorial Road St Ives The next Regional Meeting will feature a tour of the room of an innovative teacher at St Ives North Public School.
The teacher is Nerida McCredie, and here’s what she has to say about her approach:
I have my room set up as a computer-mediated classroom. No whiteboard, no desks. We have tables, computers and cushions. The children don't have set places - we're always on the move in different groups. I have 16 computers for the children to work with. All our computers are connected and we can mirror screens and share files. The children have a lot of choice about how they would like to approach an activity and we keep in touch with the ideas and strategies of others through the network (as well as lots of chatting!) I need this flexibility to be able teach in line with my understanding of learning. I want my room to be shaped by the ideas, values and interests of my students. I find that having my room set out so differently encourages children, parents and teachers to think again about learning and what school is all about.
Nerida has won awards for her achievements as a teacher, and this will be a really interesting night.
Please encourage anyone at your school to come along and enjoy the evening.

School of the Future. PHOTO
REPORT An exciting workshop for parents and
educators. RSVP: Optional – but it will help us with our planning if you email
numbers from your school to davidhope@optusnet.com.au
Regional delegates, parents who aren’t
delegates and teachers are all welcome. Our schools are changing
rapidly with the advent of new approaches to teaching, the impact of new technology,
new curricula, and changes to the way children prefer to learn. What will our schools
look like in the future? How can we parents have a say in the changes
happening now, and in the future? Our plan at this meeting is
to explore the attributes of the School of the Future. The initial driver for
this meeting came from our regional Asset Management Committee, which
recommends the allocation of the very limited funds for capital projects. One
of the issues the Committee faced was determining the relative future value,
and potential for flexibility in meeting changing requirements, of the
different projects proposed. The present DET Facilities
Standards, whilst rating well against other educational providers, are based
on a relatively static view of the functions of a classroom and a school. But
it is clear even now that the buildings and physical environments in schools
will be used quite differently in the future. Drivers of change include:
developing technology which will increasingly be used in new and innovative
ways (eg interactive whiteboards, video
conferencing); evolving approaches to teaching focus, practice and
methodologies, partially driven by a new wave of young teachers; changes to
curriculum to meet new demands from students, parents, governments and
society; and changes to learning preferences and community expectations. Fourth Term
