My Calders probably come from Nairnshire, as my g-g-g-grandfather, Capt. James Calder, who was born in 1729 in Elgin, Scotland (east of Inverness and Cawdor Castle), led the Calders in fighting for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 (just a teen-ager!); he fled, stowed away, and came to Parkton, MD. He married Margaret Bagnel, an Irish woman who resided in Annapolis, MD; she was born in 1753-54, died 12 April, 1829. Their daughter, Mary, was born in 1784-85; she married Thomas Little, who was from North Ireland, and was born in 1774-45. Mary had siblings, too. Not sure whether the Calder name has died out totally, but the Little name likely has (5 girls in my generation, plus two "lost" boys and a "lost" girl, I believe—my father’s brother’s children.) Don’t have all the collateral data to be sure on the Calders -- this is what I’d like to know, especially.

Also antecedents of Capt.James Calder (his father was Sir Thomas Calder, and James’ brother was Lt. George E. Calder, USN, and married Catherine Levely. I believe they had one daughter).

Glad to hear directly from anyone researching Calders!!  Any information is welcome.

Specific interest - My great great grandfather is an Alexander Calder. In the 1841 census he was a wood sawyer aged 20, living in Ballater in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In 1848 he had an illegitimate son (John Calder, my great grandfather) by Jean (or Jane) Campbell of Khantore, Crathie, Aberdeenshire. Jean died shortly afterwards and John was brought up by his Campbell grandparents.

My Alexander Calder is almost certainly the one who arrived in South Australia on the "Catherine" on 26 May 1851 - Click for link.

My name is James Alexander Calder born 21/8/59 in Brisbane Qld Australia.  My father was Alexander Calder (1927- 1991) born in the village of California outside Falkirk in Scotland. The farm where he was born was called Drumbroider farm (or spelling similar) and was owned by his grandfather Alexander . (Alexander seems to be a very popular name amongst the Calder's as it keeps coming up generation after generation). GGFather Alexander had sons Thomas (immigrated to Australia 1921 Childers area QLD), John who eventually inherited the farm and Alexander from whom I am descended. My father immigrated to Australia in 1951 after growing up hearing fantastic tales about his Uncle Tom in Australia.

I have 2 sons Stirling James (b1986) and James Alexander (b1989) and a daughter Krystal Lee (b1984)

I would be interested in getting in contact with anybody with knowledge of the Calder's who lived in Stirlingshire Scotland near Falkirk around the turn of the century.

I am researching the descendant (and possible ancestors) of Alexander Calder.

Alexander Calder married Margaret Reid in 1788 in Perth,Scotland.  They had 4 children:  George (b.1788), Margaret (b. 1790), William (b. 1794) and Alexander (b.1797)

His son, George Calder, married Elizabeth Williamson in 1819 in either Arbroath or Aberlemno.  They had 10 children: Anne (b. 1821); George (b. 1824); Helen (b.1826); Alexander (b.1828); James (b. 1830); William (b. 1832); David (b.1835); Elizabeth (b. 1836); John (b. 1838); Mary (b.1842).  The first 4 children were baptised in Aberlemno and the rest were baptised in Brechin.

David emigrated to Durban in South Africa in 1877.  William remained in Aberlemno and has descendants still there.  I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows what happened to the others.  I believe some of them may also have emigrated to (possibly) Australia and/or Canada .

Sherry Williamson

Canton
Michigan, USA

wiccanpt2@netzero.net

Sherry is looking for anyone researching Calder’s  in Nairnshire.

Her fourth great, James Calder was born 1785 at Nairn to William Calder and Isobel Lamb.  His was the only recorded christening to this couple.  She knows that he had a sister Isabella who never married.  James Calder married Janet Mackintosh in 1807 Nairn.  They had several children.  Janet Mackintosh passed away between 1828 when Alexandrina Gordon Mackintosh Calder was born and 1832 when James Calder, his sister Isabella, and some of the children emigrated to Dumfries, Waterloo, Ontario.

She believes that James Calder’s grandparents were James Calder and Katharine McCurich.  They were married in 1752 at Nairn.  On James Calder’s christening record in 1785 “James Calder, the child’s grandfather” is listed as a witness.  Sherry has been looking at all descendents of this family (James Calder / Katharine McCurich) hoping to find siblings of her 1785 James Calder.

Her James Calder (1785) was a tailor, his father William a weaver.  It is possible that his grandfather James was also a tailor.  Two years after the marriage of James Calder and Katharine McCurich in 1752 at Nairn, an Isobel is christened to a James Calder, tailor in Nairn.  As with many records during this timeframe, mother was not listed.  A second daughter, Margaret Calder married James Tulloch. A  James Tulloch appears as a witness to her James Calder’s christening in 1785.

The stick in the mud…………….a James Calder, farmer, married to Catherine McPherson was also recording children at the same time.  She has also been told that McPherson is an alias for McCurich/McVurich.  They could be one in the same family…………..so was the tailor also a farmer………….so many questions.
