There is, however, one question: how come most alien life-form in Star Trek is bipedal and resembles us. A realistic answer is that it is due to budgetary constrain of Paramount Picture. Although it may be that it is the nature evolutionary process in the universe that life-form similar to us are the most efficient or optimal form. Coincidentally, this is perhaps why reported closer encounter with UFOs and aliens on Earth yield (if not all) remarkably consistent account of the alien's body shape- a bipedal being.

Non-Carbon and Non-Corporeal Life Form

In Star Trek there are life forms that are non-carbon based (eg. the silicon based life form in TOS, the crystalline entity in the TNG, etc.) and there are even those that are non-corporeal (eg. energy being). Can such life form ever exist?

Based on our (and especially mine very limited) knowledge and experience such life form seem most unlikely. Despite the diversity of living things on Earth, there is a common building block: the complex DNA (or RNA in virus) molecule that contains the intricate instruction defining the composition and function of the different cells forming living things. And as far as we know only carbon is capable of forming such highly complex compounds.

There is, however, one reservation. To the extend that a non-corporeal being is equivalent to a supreme intelligent being- a GOD- there may well be one. The universe and our life often (at least to me) does not seem to make sense without one.
