BIOGRAPHY
Robert
is a young baritone who has just completed his 4-year Bachelor of Music degree
at the Melba Conservatorium of Music, Richmond. Robert continues his vocal study
with Peter Mander. He has held the Robert Salzer Foundation scholarship for
“male singers with operatic potential” since his beginning year, and received
the Youth Music Foundation scholarship in early 2007. He has also been
accelerated through the opera performance stream. Robert is currently contracted to sing with the Victorian Opera chorus for their main concert season of 2008, and debuted with them on the opera scene in 2007 singing the Berlioz version of Gluck’s Orphee et Eurydice. He has recently been heard on 3MBS’ Live at the Convent series of radio broadcasts, performing new Australian works alongside operatic favourites. He also has a close association with the Melba Conservatorium of Music’s transformation into their new operatic trust, as he performs at many promotional corporate events and functions. The close association with the Melba has seen many performances over the past 4 years, including events at The Australia Club, Guggenheim Exhibition at NGV, Soiree’s and board-room lunches to name a few. 2005 was Robert’s debut, singing Puccini’s Gloria Mass with the Monash Chorale. He has since featured as soloist in the Fauré Requiem with the Australian Catholic University choir, and also performing Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël for the Box Hill Chorale and Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been requested back many times with the Monash Chorale, singing in variety & Christmas concerts, and also in larger focus works such as Mozart's Spatzenmesse and Dvorak's Mass in D major. 2006 also saw him appear with the Monash University Choral Society – performing Mozart’s Coronation Mass (Mass in C) and King Thamos and with the Melbourne University Choral Society as soloist in Pergolesi’s Magnificat. He also featured in the trio from Mendelssohn's unfinished oratorio Christus with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra. Other appearances include Boronia Uniting Church’s annual Messiah, and as Christmas caroller at St Vincents and Mercy Private Hospitals. In his early years he was a chorister with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic (including tours to the Sydney Opera House and Perth Concert Hall) and the Australian Catholic University Choir for many years. Robert has also been a member of the Melbourne Chorale, the Monash University Conservatorium “Viva Voce” choir & Melbourne University Choral Society. He has recently performerd with the new Exaudi Youth Choir, in which ANU Professor William R Hawkey, MBE commented on a “fine and sensitive baritone performance” for a solo performed by Robert on their new album “Hear Us”. 2005 saw Robert nominated for “Best New Talent” by the Music Theatre Guild Society of Victoria, for his debuting amateur music-theatre role of Riff in CPAC’s West Side Story. He has made many solo casual appearances, including with Mornington Peninsula Theatre Company, Melbourne Opera Company chorus, and other professional engagements through the Melba Conservatorium, including a national TV appearance on ABC-TV’s “Can We Help?” He is currently performing as Cascada in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society Opera Victoria’s “The Merry Widow”. Robert has strong aspirations to pursue a career in the field of opera, operetta and music theatre, and is grateful for every opportunity given to perform. Last Updated 28th March, 2008.
