The headstone of
William Martin states that he died on 25th December
1838. This burial took place before official records were kept.

An interesting
feature is that some headstones were placed with the inscription facing
to the west, away from the grave. The footstone marks the position of
the grave. I am told this could relate to a custom in parts of Scotland
where the carved faces are set to the west. If anyone knows of this, I
would like some details.
