St. Stephen's Cemetery is located on 1.25 Acres south of the church and is the final resting place of a number of prominent early citizens. The first recorded burial is that of Elizabeth Morkley, the 2 month old daughter of an Emu Plains blacksmith, who was buried on 23rd July 1839.

 General views of the cemetery

The headstone of William Martin states that he died on  25th December 1838. This burial took place before official records were kept.

The west facing headstones

An interesting feature is that some headstones were placed with the inscription facing to the west, away from the grave. The footstone marks the position of the grave. I am told this could relate to a custom in parts of Scotland where the carved faces are set to the west. If anyone knows of this, I would  like some details.
