Objective
To provide an opportunity for outstanding Chinese youths who are residing overseas and in Hong Kong to know more about the socio-economic and cultural development of Chinese Mainland. 

An Invitation To Participate In the 2nd China Synergy Program
For Outstanding Youth (CSP)

The Program is organized by the Organizing Committee of CSP. Participating Organizers include all eight universities and institute in Hong Kong: City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Institute of Education, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and The University of Hong Kong. The event co-organizer in China is China Overseas Friendship Association.

The Program is designed to provide an opportunity for Chinese undergraduates in Hong Kong and overseas to know more about China and Chinese Culture. When it was held for the first time last year, 69 undergraduates participated. They were selected from amongst over 400 students from universities in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and Hong Kong. They started their 2-week program in Hong Kong and visited Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. They were received by Mr. Li Lan-Qing, Vie-Premier of China in Beijing and Mr. Tung Chee Hua, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

This year's Program, co-inciding with the new Millennium, is to be held on a larger scale. 130 undergraduates will be selected from overseas and 70 from Hong Kong to form a 200-strong delegation which will tour Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Xian, Beijing and Shanghai. In these cities they will meet with senior government officials, students and scholars; take part in exchange activities and visit places of socio-economic, technological and cultural interest.

The Organiser will cover all costs of the trip including return transportation between Hong Kong, Xian, Shanghai and Beijing, meals, accommodation and ground transport. Selected applicants are required to pay only for their own outward and homeward bound flights to Hong Kong, airport taxes, visa fee, travel and medical insurance.

CSP's patron is Mr. Tung Chee Hua, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, the Honorary Delegation Leader: Mr. Fok Ying Tung, Deputy Chairman, the People's Political Consultative Committee of PRC; special advisers: Professor Tien Chang Lin, Professor Daniel C. Tsui and Professor Yang Chen Ning; Honorary Adviser: Mr. Zou Zhe Kai, the Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government In the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The delegation will be led by Dr. Alice K.Y. Lam, Chairman of the University Grants Committee. The two Deputy Delegation leaders are: Professor H.K.Chang and Ms. Tomina Leung.

Program
The 17-day program of exploration and exchange activities will be held in Hong Kong, Xian, Shanghai and Beijing.
Activities include :
a. meeting with top government officials;
b. touring major socio-economic, technological, and cultural development projects;
c. participating in exchange activities with local undergraduates;
d. visiting local households;
e. meeting with outstanding Chinese youths; and
f. sightseeing.

Hong Kong (July 4-7)
Topical visits, Peak Tour;
Commissioning Ceremony to be officiated

Guangzhou (July 7-8)
Visit Huang Pu Military Academy,
City Tour; Visit the Zhongshan University.

Xian (July 8-11)
Visit Terracotta, Ancient Tributes Site Remains;
Visit Xian Jiao Tong University,
Meeting with Senior Government officials

Beijing (July 11-15)
Visit 'Old Palace', Tiananmen Square, Museum of History,
the Great Wall, 13 Mausoleum, Military Force;
Visit Peking Opera;
Visit Qing Hua University, Beijing University,
Central Television & Radio Corporation;
Meeting with top Government officials.

Shanghai (July 15-19)
Visit Pudong Economic Development Area, the Bund, and Shanghai Museum;
Visit Shanghai JiaoTong University and Tongji University
Meeting with Senior Government officials

Hong Kong (July 19-20)

Delegation

This is also needs its own page, again because the list is soooooo long. Approximately 203 students on the actual trip. The figure changed each time we saw it reported on the news, at the press conference, in the paper, in speeches. I've never been in the same room with so many extraordinary people, the closest would be at NSGH.

Other bits

The Organisers will cover part of the costs including return airfares between Hong Kong, Xian, Shanghai and Beijing, meals, accommodation and ground transport. Selected applicants are required to pay for their own outward and homeward bound flights to Hong Kong, airport taxes, visa fee, travel and medical insurance.

Candidates should be:

i) ethnic Chinese;

ii) full-time undergraduates/postgraduate including students in final year classes;

iii) fluent in English

 

As many applicants are expected, the Selection Panel will look for candidates who have:

i)  outstanding scholastic achievements,

ii) exceptional talents or achievements in non-academic areas

    (e.g. sports, music, arts or general creativity, etc.),

iii) leadership qualities as demonstrated in involvement in extra-curricular activities and

    /or community services, and

iv) special recommendation.

Selection will be conducted by a Selection Panel consisting of well-known and professionals.
