The first Ecumenical Council: Council of Nicea

The Creed

A creed is a statement of belief. Creeds in their earlier forms were used by the apostles, and many are recorded in the New Testament (Eph. 5:14; 1 Tim. 3:16; 2 Tim. 2:11-13). The creed used throughout the church was adopted at the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325 and expanded at the Council of Constantinople in A.D. 381. The Nicene Creed is used at baptisms, the Divine Liturgy, and in personal daily prayers. (The Orthodox Study Bible)

Below is the Readers version of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed used at Saints Michael and Gabriel Orthodox Church.

The creed is completely Bible-based. Clicking on the bible passages will open the verses of the bible in a new window.

Readers version of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, and of all things, visible and invisible;

And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten
of the Father before all ages, Light from Light; True God from True God;
begotten, not made; of one Essence with the Father. Through Him all things
were made.

For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and was incarnate of
the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was
crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered, and was buried.

On the third day He rose in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

And He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His
Kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds
from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

And I believe in one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge
one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the
dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
